An attempt has been made in the present study to find out the relationship between the symptomatology of nasobronchial allergy patients of Delhi with markedly positive skin reactions and prevalence of total pollen concentration in the atmosphere, concentration of major individual pollen types, total fungal spores and house dust mites together with climatic factors such as mean monthly temperature and relative humidity. A statistically significant correlation was not found between symptomatology of the patients of Delhi and mean monthly relatively humidity, atmospheric concentration of pollen, fungal spores and house dust mites. A significant negative correlation was observed between symptomatology of patients and mean monthly temperature. Except for the pollen of prospis which showed significant positive correlation with the symptomatology of Delhi patients, a significant positive correlation was absent with respect to other individual pollen types.

In an attempt to assess patient and physician behavior patterns which interfere with effective medical treatment, 100 chronic adult and adolescent asthmatics were asked about the frequency and the nature of their medication non-compliance. The nature of the patient's medication abuse was also related to underlying personality characteristics, as measured by the MMPI Panic-Fear scale. Finally eleven physicians were asked about the frequency with which they asked their patients about over abuse and under abuse of prescribed medications. The results are impressive, showing that 54.0% of the patients reported some type of medication abuse, and that the nature of the abuse may be predicted from the patient's MMPI Panic-Fear score. Perhaps the most important finding was that while over 50% of the patients reported medication non-compliance (under abuse, over abuse, or cyclical abuse), only 27.3% of the physicians said that they routinely inquired about medication abuse. Such a discrepancy suggests one area in which patient and physician characteristics may have a bearing on the effective delivery of medical treatment. The findings underscore the need for physicians to include in their diagnostic procedure a routine inquiry into the patient's patterns of medication non-compliance.

The allergenic significance of some fungi prevailing in the respiratory tract of allergy patients was studied. The percentage of markedly positive intradermal reactions observed was higher in patients to the extracts of homologous fungi found in their respiratory passages as compared to the patients who did not show the same fungi in theri respiratory tact.

Goldfish weighing up to three grams are injected intracranially. Employing this method, d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25), d-2-acetyl lysergic acid diethylamide (ALD-52), 1-methyl d-lysergic acid butano-lamide (UML-491), and 5-methoxy dimethyl tryptamine (5-MEO-DMT) were found to be as pharmacologically active as previously noted in fish and in man. The relationship of these drugs to their anti-serotonin activity is of particular interest to the allergist because of the way in which the congeners and derivatives of LSD block the action of serotonin on smooth muscle.

An examinaton was conducted of the relationship between Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) measurements obtained in the homes of two boys with asthma and the predictability of asthma episodes. An approach was developed for assessing the predictive utility of PEFR data. Results indicated approximately three-fold increases in the predictability of asthma episodes for the two experimental subjects. Potential applications of these results to the management of asthma are discussed.
