This discussion paper describes the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) with its scoring and interpretation along with its psychometric testing and translations. METHOD: In addition to the studies conducted by the instrument developers, databases were searched for studies where other researchers used the PDSS to assess postpartum depressive symptoms. Studies were included that measured the psychometrics of the scale and studies that reported the translation of the PDSS into other languages. RESULTS: Evidence is presented that the PDSS is a reliable and valid screening scale for use by psychiatric mental health nurses and other health care providers. The scale also has been translated into 14 languages, so it is available to screen non-English speaking mothers. CONCLUSION: Childbirth is one of the most powerful triggers of psychiatric illness in a woman's life. Postpartum depression is a treatable mental health condition, but first, women need to be screened so they can be identified and referrals made. Screening for this devastating mood disorder in new mothers is an essential role of psychiatric mental health nurses and other clinicians so that treatment can be started as early as possible to avoid harmful consequences.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is a serious crime that is a prevalent mental and public health problem. AIMS: Addressing the needs of SA victims and providing appropriate treatment are essential to reduce potential adve...BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is a serious crime that is a prevalent mental and public health problem. AIMS: Addressing the needs of SA victims and providing appropriate treatment are essential to reduce potential adverse short- and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Our team undertook an extensive systematic literature review (published between January 2006 and July 2021) to provide evidence-based mental health intervention recommendations for adolescent and adult victims of SA. Where SA-specific research was limited, the literature and clinical practice guidelines on treatments for trauma-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were reviewed to provide additional information to formulate recommendations. RESULTS: Findings strongly support several primary psychotherapy treatments: cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, narrative exposure therapy, and prolonged exposure therapy. Complementary (aerobic exercise, art, drama, and music therapy) and pharmacological treatments were explored. CONCLUSIONS: Mental health nurses who provide services for victims of SA can utilize this overview to guide recommendations for treatment of SA trauma and related PTSD symptoms to mitigate the short- and long-term negative impacts after a traumatic event. When victims of SA receive optimal mental health treatments, our communities benefit as victims heal and recover.

Coprophilia refers to sexual excitement from viewing, smelling, or handling feces, as well as fantasizing about another person engaging in these activities. Coprophagia, or eating one's own or another person's excrement, has also been observed in some patients with coprophilia. AIMS: The purposes of this review are to examine the current literature on the etiology, symptoms, interviewing techniques, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy used for each disorder and to elicit best practice guidelines in the treatment of patients with coprophila and coprophagia. METHODS: Electronic and hand searches were initiated using CINAHL, EBSCOhost, SAGEpub, and MEDLINE databases between 1990 and 2022 using the terms "coprophilia," "coprophagia," "paraphilia NOS," and "other specified paraphilic disorder" restricted to English. RESULTS: Individual case reports and limited studies were found in this literature. Reported treatment protocols included individual and tandem use of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, with mixed outcomes. Future studies are needed to explore the factors that mitigate the paraphilias, therapeutic management, and treatment outcomes, to produce evidence-based practice treatment guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the psychological and biological factors that may contribute to these disorders' manifestations may portend a greater understanding and insight into the genesis of the paraphilias. Having specific evidence-based treatment protocols will afford the psychiatric nurse practitioner to render patient-centered, safe, and culturally competent care and effect better patient outcomes among this understudied population.

University-level students are vulnerable to psychologica...BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus pandemic resulted in a sudden change to the daily activities of individuals, including the academic institutions. University-level students are vulnerable to psychological health issues when faced with a large-scale crisis such as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic; they need resilience to help them successfully manage and cope with changes. AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the resilience and associated predictors among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Arab Emirates. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional descriptive design to examine the levels of resilience and associated predictors of university students. No sampling criterion was set up and all active students from all programs were eligible to participate. A convenience sampling technique was employed for its practical feasibility and efficiency. The data were collected between February 2021 and May 2021. RESULTS: A total of 2,085 students completed the study questionnaires. The mean score of total resilience among the students was 65.01 (±14.697), while the mean score for personal resilience and caregiver resilience was 38.08 (±8.675) and 26.92 (±6.694), respectively. Comparing total resilience, personal resilience, and caregiver resilience with students' Cumulative Grade Point Average level revealed a significant difference. The predictors of resilience include academic level and number of courses the students enrolled in. CONCLUSION: Academic institutions need to support the establishment of resilience training programs to prepare students for any challenging time, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
BACKGROUND: Although college life can be fulfilling, it can be stressful, particularly for health professional students. In addition, they may have had Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) that increases their sensitivity...BACKGROUND: Although college life can be fulfilling, it can be stressful, particularly for health professional students. In addition, they may have had Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) that increases their sensitivity to academic stress. Yet, students need to overcome challenges to become successful professionals. The literature suggests the following factors may be associated with resilience: ACE and academic stress as the antecedents; ego-resilience, emotion regulation, resources, social support, inflammatory markers, and genes as the defining attributes; and mental health and sense of coherence (SOC) as the consequences. AIMS: The purpose is to identify the relationships among factors associated with resilience using network analysis. METHODS: A total of 70 college students participated in this cross-sectional pilot study. They completed measures of psychosocial variables and provided saliva samples, which were analyzed for /rs25531 and inflammatory markers. Mixed graphical models including all variables were estimated using the R-package . RESULTS: Network analysis revealed positive associations between (1) mental health and SOC; (2) mental health and resources; (3) mental health and social support; (4) SOC and reappraisal of emotion regulation; (5) resources and reappraisal of emotion regulation; and (6) resources and social support. In addition, SOC and academic stress were negatively associated. Furthermore, the short variant of /rs25531 was associated with stronger suppression of emotion regulation and fewer resources compared with the long variant. CONCLUSION: Resilience may be influenced by biopsychosocial factors, notably SOC and . However, longitudinal research is needed with a larger sample size to better understand how these and other factors may affect resilience.

AIM: This study was conducted to...BACKGROUND: The psychological conditions of children exposed to earthquakes, such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive, hostility, and paranoid thought, have not been adequately studied. AIM: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between the mental states and sleep patterns of children who experienced the Kahramanmaraş earthquake. METHODS: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and relational study that included 867 children from 11 provinces of Turkey affected by the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6th. The Child Follow-up Form, Mental Symptom Screening Scale, and Child Sleep Habits Scale were used to collect data. RESULTS: The psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression, somatization, anger-hostility, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychotic symptoms, and other issues) experienced by children after the earthquake explained 96.9% of their sleep disturbance. Some of the demographic characteristics, such as age, the status of experiencing loss in the earthquake, the survival status of their mother and father, the survival status of their siblings, the total number of losses after the earthquake, the total number of losses in the nuclear family, total hours spent under the rubble, the hours children waited for their father, mother, and siblings to come out of the rubble, accounted for 77.9% of the mental symptoms (SCL-90). CONCLUSIONS: These results showed the importance of early recognition and treatment of sleep disturbances to prevent possible psychiatric disorders after children have been exposed to natural disasters. It is of great importance to evaluate the mental states of children after the earthquake and to apply appropriate psychiatric interventions.

BACKGROUND: A Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) was developed in a large public college of nursing in the Southeastern United States to address the urgent mental health needs expressed by growing numbers of nursing student...BACKGROUND: A Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) was developed in a large public college of nursing in the Southeastern United States to address the urgent mental health needs expressed by growing numbers of nursing students related to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). AIMS: The purpose of this study was to report on a needs assessment conducted by the MHTF. METHODS: The needs assessment study design was a 16-item cross-sectional online survey and four "Town Hall" focus groups with nursing students, faculty, and staff ( = 1-8 participants per group). Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and free-text questions from the survey and focus groups were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. RESULTS: Undergraduate and graduate students ( = 115) ranging in age from 17 to 50 years completed the survey; 95% female, 94% full-time, 56% employed, 77% White, and 81% in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Eleven students participated in the focus groups. The analysis of the free-text survey questions identified the students' perceived needs. Mental health care was the most frequently requested, followed by faculty check-ins, stress management, and peer support. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of the survey provided an opportunity for students to communicate concerns and make requests. To address the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nursing students, multi-modal needs assessments should be conducted periodically to identify priority mental health needs.

HD creates behavioral disturbances, cognitive decline, and motor disorder progression over the lifet...INTRODUCTION: Little is known about reducing the challenges for caregivers and patients with Huntington's disease (HD). HD creates behavioral disturbances, cognitive decline, and motor disorder progression over the lifetime requiring some individuals to need long-term facility care. AIMS: There are concerns about safety and confidence of employees caring for residents with HD. METHODS: Nursing staff, administrators, and auxiliary employees were recruited from a long-term care (LTC) facility in rural Iowa, from July 2020 to August 2020. A de-escalation training intervention was delivered. The 1-day intervention included resident behaviors, planning and safety, teamwork, communication, and included role play and simulation. A pre- and post-survey measured confidence and competence in caring for people with HD before and after a training intervention. A resident medical record audit explored challenging behaviors before and after the training intervention. RESULTS: Of 25 participants, six were registered nurses/licensed practical nurses (RNs/LPNs; 24%), four administrators (16%), eight nursing assistants (32%), and seven auxiliary employees (28%). There was improvement in employees perceived safety (33.3%), co-workers enjoyment working with HD residents (54%), understanding symptoms of HD (44.4%), confidence in job abilities (21.0%), and confidence in ability to care for patients with HD (26.3%). A medical record audit showed decreased documentation of resident aggression and care refusal post-intervention. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest de-escalation training in LTC facilities increased perception of job safety, co-workers' enjoyment, understanding HD symptoms, confidence in ability to care for patients with HD, and decreased resident agitation and care refusal.

AIMS: To examine whether an 8-week nurse-led cognitive-behavioral based group interventio...BACKGROUND: Current evidence of nonpharmacological intervention for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is lacking. AIMS: To examine whether an 8-week nurse-led cognitive-behavioral based group intervention would enhance resilient coping and life quality among community-based patients with TRD. METHOD: The participants were randomly sampled from a cohort of TRD recruited from two general teaching hospitals. The two groups were assessed with multiple outcome measures at baseline (T); 8-week post-baseline (T); and at 3, 6, and 9 months after T (T). Psychoeducation was nested in the cognitive behavioral group intervention to facilitate discussion. RESULTS: Of the 23 participants (mean age 56 years, 69.6% female) in the experimental group, higher resilient coping and lower mental distress levels at T as well as later improved quality of life and community integration at T were observed compared to the controls across COVID-19 (T). Overall, the scores of resilience and community integration were higher throughout the four follow-up points of observations for the experimental group. CONCLUSION: The findings indicated that an 8-week nurse-led cognitive-behavioral based group intervention may enhance the TRD patients' resilient coping and mental distress levels while providing the potentials for community reintegration after mental health psychoeducation engagement. It is imperative for the nurses caring for patients with TRD to extend from clinical-based intervention to community-based self-care approach, with the importance of short-term stress management and healthy lifestyle development highlighted during the community reintegration trajectory.

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network Trauma-Informed Organiz...INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents receiving inpatient psychiatric services have disproportionately high levels of exposure to trauma and adversity. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network Trauma-Informed Organizational Assessment (TIOA) is a comprehensive tool intended to guide implementation of trauma-informed care, but it has not yet been applied in inpatient settings. AIMS: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to describe trauma-informed care in inpatient child/adolescent psychiatry with the TIOA, examine relatedness among trauma-informed care domains, and explore barriers or facilitators to applying trauma-informed care. METHODS: This quality improvement project used mixed methods. We conducted a web-based survey in Summer 2022 with staff members (clinical and administrative) at two inpatient child/adolescent psychiatric units in California to assess trauma-informed care practices with the TIOA (87 items). Qualitative follow-up interviews were offered to interested participants. A correlation matrix and cluster analyses were used to examine relationships among TIOA domains; qualitative data were analyzed thematically. RESULTS: There were 69 survey respondents and seven qualitative interviews. TIOA domain scores ranged from a low of 2.3 to a high of 3.2, indicating that practices were occurring only "rarely" to "sometimes." There were two major themes identified from qualitive interviews: (a) barriers to trauma-informed care in an inpatient context that can be resource-constrained or coercive; and (b) discovering strategies to provide trauma-informed care despite structural barriers. CONCLUSION: Organizational interventions targeting any domains of trauma-informed care are needed in inpatient settings given limited uptake of trauma-informed care.

Treatment for depression and anxiety includes medications and psychiatric treatment in inpatient, outpatient, and residential treatment programs; the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can have beneficial results by decreasing symptoms, recognize patients' preference for CAM, and be cost-effective. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Tai Chi on depression and anxiety symptoms on inpatient psychosocial or substance use disorder (SUD) rehabilitation treatment program residents since little evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of Tai Chi on participants in residential mental health treatment programs. METHOD: A mixed-method, cohort design with 88 participants (41 usual treatment without Tai Chi, 47 intervention) used a demographic survey, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, self-report, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 at Weeks 1 and 4 of the treatment program. After Week 4, the intervention group responded to six open-ended questions about Tai Chi's effects on their overall depression and anxiety. RESULTS: The anxiety level of the intervention group was significantly decreased, as evidenced by the Hamilton Anxiety Scale scores ( = .02). However, the measures of depression did not differ between the groups. Two themes, mindfulness and satisfaction, were identified from the written responses regarding the Tai Chi intervention. CONCLUSION: Tai Chi effectively reduced symptoms of anxiety that varied by age and ethnicity. This study increased the insight regarding the benefit of including Tai Chi as a complementary therapy for those participating in residential treatment programs.

Quick and appropriate treatment for anxiety and depression can reduce disease burden and improve social functioning. Currently, less than half of the population with comorbid anxiety and depression receives the recommended treatment. AIMS: This analysis aims to identify factors predictive of utilizing mental health treatment for those with anxiety and/or depression by analyzing intrinsic, patient-centered factors. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional cohort analysis using National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2019 data. The sample size is 7,156 adults aged 18 to 64 with family incomes ≤100% of the federal poverty level. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify factors predictive of care utilization in this population. Variables of interest include scores on Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), service utilization, level of social functioning, having a usual source for care, and previous mental health care utilization. Additional covariates were age, gender, race, country of origin, education, marital status, and insurance coverage. RESULTS: Twenty-one percent of respondents reported using mental health services. Factors predictive of care utilization were older age, female gender, limited social functioning, having a usual source of care, and insurance coverage. CONCLUSION: There are significant barriers to receiving quick and appropriate care for anxiety and/or depression. Strategies should focus on reducing barriers for young adults, men, and the uninsured/underinsured. Strategies for integrating mental health services into primary care could increase the percentage of people with anxiety and/or depression who receive services.

However, no research has yet investigated the contributing factors of this phenomenon in Jordanian psychiatric hospitals from the nurses' perspectives. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the factors contributing to workplace violence in Jordanian psychiatric hospitals from the perspective of mental health nurses. METHODS: An exploratory, qualitative design was utilized. Using audio-recorded, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews, a purposive sample of 24 mental health nurses were interviewed to collect data. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Four overarching themes were identified: . CONCLUSION: From nurses' perspectives, an in-depth understanding of factors contributing to workplace violence provides a foundation for developing preventive interventions, improving work environment safety, and promoting nurses' mental health. Prevention strategies and further studies are warranted to limit this phenomenon.

OBJECTIVES: This research ai...BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in adverse effects on individuals' physical and mental health worldwide, with university students also being adversely affected by this process. OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to determine the mental condition, sleep quality, and eating behaviors of university students during the COVID-19 process. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,065 university students. Study data were collected with an online questionnaire including a personal information form, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Dutch Eating Behavior Scale. RESULTS: Students' poor sleep quality was determined to be 69.5%. It was also determined that students' depression and stress levels were moderate that their anxiety levels were low, their eating behaviors were generally problematic, and more than half had poor sleep quality. In addition, eating disorders and poor sleep quality increased as depression, anxiety, and stress levels increased, and eating disorders increased as poor sleep quality increased ( < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The results emphasize the importance of the strengthening of students' mental health, particularly by improving their sleep quality and eating habits. Evidence-based interventions regarding the effects of the pandemic should be made for students under the leadership of a psychiatric nurse, and effective strategies must be developed accordingly.
OBJECTIVE: An American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) task force reviewed current staffing research to revise and update the 2011 APNA "Staffing inpatient psychiatric units" position paper and provide recommendati...OBJECTIVE: An American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) task force reviewed current staffing research to revise and update the 2011 APNA "Staffing inpatient psychiatric units" position paper and provide recommendations to the APNA Board of Directors on how psychiatric mental health (PMH) nurses might champion the staffing needs of inpatient psychiatric units. METHODS: Current research on staffing and nursing practice in inpatient psychiatric units was reviewed as well as variables believed to influence staffing and nursing practice, such as consumer needs and workplace culture. Since current nurse staffing principles emphasize nursing value and how that value is connected to outcomes, the literature search included a focus on staffing and related patient outcomes. RESULTS: PMH nurses are critical to the safety and quality of care in inpatient psychiatric units. However, there are little existing data on the relationship between staffing levels and even common adverse events such as staff injury and restraint of patients. Furthermore, there is scant research conducted on inpatient psychiatric units that informs optimal staffing models or establishes links between staffing and patient outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with current evidence, the universal use of a single method or model of determining staffing needs (e.g., nursing hours per, case mix index, or mandatory ratios) is not recommended. PMH nurses should champion systematic evaluation of staffing on their inpatient units against select patient, nurse, and system outcomes. A data repository of PMH nurse-sensitive outcomes is necessary to benchmark unit performance and staffing.

AIMS: This review is to examine...BACKGROUND: Suboptimal mental health literacy levels among general hospital health care professionals negatively impact the care coordination of patients with physical-mental comorbidity. AIMS: This review is to examine the evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to improve the mental health literacy of general hospital health care professionals. METHODS: A systematic search of literature was conducted in 13 electronic databases with manual searching of reference lists from 1980 to 2021. Studies were screened by pre-set eligibility criteria, that is, participants who were general hospital health care professionals taking care of adult patients, the interventions aimed at improving any components of participants' mental health literacy, comparisons were alternative active intervention or no intervention, and the primary outcomes were any aspects of mental health literacy. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials ( = 1,732 participants) were included in this review. Evidence indicated that mental health literacy interventions with educational components can improve components of the health care professionals' mental health literacy, in terms of mental health knowledge and mental illness-related attitudes/stigma. In addition, few studies evaluated all components of participants' mental health literacy. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the available evidence, educational interventions had a positive effect on components of general hospital health care professionals' mental health literacy. Health care organizations should provide educational programs to enhance general hospital health care professionals' mental health literacy. Further studies are needed to explore interventions that target all components of general hospital staff's mental health literacy and to evaluate its impact on the psychiatric consultation-liaison service utilization in general hospitals, as well as patient outcomes.
