Participatory action research understands the implementation of research as a cooperation or coproduction of researchers with nonscientific individuals. However, the general knowledge about the participatory approach as well as participatory methods and their implementation is still limited. Especially the active involvement and empowerment of children and adolescents require special measures and a creative and flexible application of various methods. In addition, the use of participatory methods in neurodevelopmental research first demands prior explanation of complex techniques to successfully implement the cooperation and coproduction between researchers and children and adolescents. In this contribution, we emphasize the relevance of the participatory approach for scientific work, present different methods that allow an introduction of complex techniques in neurodevelopmental research, and illustrate how to systematically apply this approach to research in children and adolescents.

Fecal Microbiota Transplants in the Context of (Child and Adolescent) Psychiatric Disorders There has recently been a significant increase in interest in gut microbiota and its interaction with the brain (gut-brain axis). Not only are the findings of microbiome research interesting for basic scientists, they also offer relevant insights for clinical practice. A causal relationship between gut microbiome and various somatic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel diseases, and obesity as well as psychiatric diseases such as major depression, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders seems plausible. To study the causal relationship of intestinal bacteria with individual phenotypes, researchers apply so-called stool transplantations (fecal microbiota transplantations) in the preclinical context. For this purpose, they transfer microbiota samples from patients into laboratory animals to observe possible changes in phenotype. In the clinical context, fecal microbiota transplantation is already being used with therapeutic intentions for selected diseases, for example, recurrent infections with or inflammatory bowel diseases; they have already become part of the official clinical guidelines for . For many other diseases, however, including mental illnesses, the potential of using fecal transplantations for therapeutic purposes is still being explored. Previous findings suggest that the intestinal microbiome, particularly fecal microbiota transplantations, represent a promising starting point for new therapeutic approaches.

Pathological Demand Avoidance: Current State of Research and Critical Discussion Pathological demand avoidance (PDA) describes children who obsessively avoid any demand to a clinically relevant extent and is presently the subject of controversial discussion. Their behavior may be interpreted as an attempt to reduce anxiety by establishing security and predictability through rigid control of the environment as well as the demands and expectations of others. The symptoms are described in the context of autism spectrum disorder. This article reviews the current state of research and discusses the questionable validity of pathological demand avoidance as an independent diagnostic entity. It also addresses the impact of the behavior profile on development and treatment. This paper concludes that PDA is not a diagnostic entity nor a subtype of autism; rather, it is a behavior profile that can be associated with adverse illness progression and unfavorable outcomes. PDA is one feature in a complex model. We must consider not only the patient's characteristics but also those of the caregiver and their psychopathology. The reactions of the interaction partners as well as the treatment decisions play a key role play for the affected individuals. Substantial research is needed concerning the occurrence of the behavior profile PDA in diverse disorders, treatment options, and treatment responses.

Depressive Disorders in Adolescence: Current State of Studies Concerning the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis Depressive disorders increase during adolescence and often lead to significant impairment in affected individuals - despite treatment. Current research efforts aim to further investigate the pathophysiology of depression, considering the influence of gut microbiota on the gut-brain axis. The present narrative review outlines the current state of studies of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in depressive disorders as well as the direct and indirect interactions in adolescence. Besides providing promising results from animal studies, studies on the microbiota-gut-brain axis in adults suffering from depressive disorders are growing steadily. In depressed adolescents, however, the study situation is still marginal, making a recommendation for the supplementation of probiotics and prebiotics in depressed children and adolescents impossible according to the current state of research. Against the background of a very limited number of studies involving adolescents with depressive disorders, the interactive role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in adolescent development should receive special attention in future research projects.

Functional Constipation and Nonretentive Fecal Incontinence in Children and Adolescents: Clinical Guideline for Assessment and Treatment Constipation and fecal incontinence are common disorders in children and adolescents and are associated with incapacitation and a high rate of comorbid psychological disorders. Functional constipation and nonretentive fecal incontinence can be differentiated according to the current Rome-IV classification systems. This interdisciplinary guideline aims to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding somatic and psychiatric assessment and treatment. It formulates consensus-based, practical recommendations. The members of the Guideline Commission consisted of 11 professional associations and a parental organization. The guideline was based on current literature searches, several online surveys, and consensus conferences based on standard procedures. Functional constipation is much more common than nonretentive fecal incontinence. Constipation requires a detailed medical assessment to exclude somatic causes, especially in young children. Red flags are useful indicators of organic causes to be considered. Most cases of constipation are functional (approximately 95 %). Counseling, toilet training, disimpaction, and long-term oral laxatives, combined with cognitive-behavioral interventions, are most effective. The assessment and treatment of nonretentive fecal incontinence are similar. The rate of somatic factors is much lower (approximately 1 %). Laxatives can worsen outcomes and should be avoided. Comorbid psychological disorders are common (approximately 30 % to 50 %). They should be assessed and treated additionally according to evidence-based guidelines. The recommendations of this guideline were approved with a high consensus. Interdisciplinary cooperation is especially important, as somatic factors and comorbid psychological disorders and symptoms need to be considered. More research is required, especially regarding nonretentive fecal incontinence.

Trends in Adolescents' Satisfaction with Their Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment: A Panel Analysis over 7 Years Because the German legislature is increasingly enabling adolescents' participation in their psychiatric treatment, we traced changes in satisfaction of 6,893 patients at the end of their stay in 10 hospitals using BEST-J. The treatments resulted in a fair overall satisfaction without any improvement over the 7 years studied. In seven hospitals, we calculated deviation from the overall satisfaction based on annual surveys. Satisfaction with the psychotherapeutic relationship was good from the beginning, whereas the relationship with caregivers improved during the sample period. When new legal standards were introduced, we measured an improvement in some items concerning patient participation (coercive measures information, goals of treatment discussed). Patients were less satisfied with the information about their illness than with medication information. Initially poor satisfaction with leave regulations significantly improved over time. Respect for privacy also improved. Satisfaction with the environment and service organization scored substantially worse than the other items. Peer relations within the ward were rated close to overall satisfaction. The results point to benefits from training in psychotherapy and a growing awareness of closeness-distance issues and patients' rights. Nevertheless, psychoeducation and leave regulations require improvement. Furthermore, patients stated unmet needs for refurbishing and renovating buildings.

Metacognitions and interoceptive sensibility in the perception of premonitory urges in tic disorders across the lifespan Depending on contextual factors, the prevalence of premonitory urges (PU) in patients with tic disorders (TD) increases with age and varies both intra- and interindividually. In youth, PUs correlate with metacognitions. In both youth and adults, interoceptive sensibility is altered compared to healthy controls. We examined the relationship between PUs, tics, metacognitions, and interoceptive sensibility across the lifespan regarding tic severity. In an online survey, 53 participants reported their PUs on the Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (PUTS) and tic severity on the Symptom Checklist for Tic Disorders (SBB-TIC). We assessed interoceptive sensibility via the Body Perception Questionnaire (BPQ-A) and metacognitions regarding tics with the Belief About Tics Scale (BATS). Adults scored higher on the PUTS than youth. In youth, interoceptive sensibility increased with age; interoceptive sensibility correlated with PUTS. Metacognitions and interoceptive sensibility explained a significant amount of variance in premonitory urges, even after controlling for tic severity and age. The presumed cause of age-dependent development of PUs in youth lies in their neurophysiological maturing processes. However, negative metacognitions and interoceptive abilities also play an important role in the development and maintenance of PU and might be of therapeutic use in the treatment of TD.
