This study attempts to discuss the correlation between UGT1A1*28 as uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase gene promoter and coding region Gly71Arg gene polymorphism with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of neonates in Wuhan. A total of 168 neonates were divided into the hyperbilirubinemia group (case group, n=108) and healthy neonates group (control group, n=60). Their DNA was obtained through blood extraction. The gene exon mutation of UGT1A1 was detected by Sanger sequencing, which revealed the relationship between UGT1A1*28 and Gly71Arg polymorphism with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of neonates. The results showed that: (1) The frequency of UGT1A1*28 allele mutation in the case group and the control group was 9.3% and 10% respectively, with the difference being not significant between the two groups (P>0.05). (2) The frequency of Gly71Arg allele mutation in the case group and the control group was 35.1% and 21.7% respectively, with the difference being significant between the two groups (P<0.01). (3) The serum bilirubin level of Gly71Arg mutant homozygous and heterozygous subgroups (n=66) in the case group was 302.7±31.4 μmol/L, which was significantly higher than 267.3±28.5 μmol/L of the wild subgroup (n=42) (P<0.01). It was suggested that the occurrence of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia of neonates in Wuhan was not associated with UGT1A1*28 gene polymorphism, but closely with the Gly71Arg gene polymorphism. Meanwhile, the Arg allele mutation was related to the degree of jaundice.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a fatal, neurovisceral lipid storage disease, neuropathologically characterized by cytoplasmic sequestration of glycolipids in neurons, progressive neuronal loss, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) formation, and axonal spheroids (AS). Cytoskeletal pathology including accumulation of hyperphosphorylated cytoskeletal proteins is a neuropathological hallmark of the mouse model of NPC (npc mice). With a goal of elucidating the mechanisms underlying the lesion formation, we investigated the temporal and spatial characteristics of cytoskeletal lesions and the roles of cdc2, cdk4, and cdk5 in lesion formation in young npc mice. Cytoskeletal lesions were detectable in npc mice at three weeks of age. Importantly, concomitant activation of cdc2/cyclin B1 kinase and accumulation of a subsequently generated cohort of phospho-epitopes were detected. The activation of cdk4/cyclin D1 and cdk5/p25 kinases was observed during the fourth week of life in npc mice, and this activation contributed to the lesion formation. We concluded that the progression of cytoskeletal pathology in npc mice older than four weeks is accelerated by the cumulative effect of cdc2, cdk4, and cdk5 activation. Furthermore, cdc2/cyclin B1 may act as a key initial player one week earlier. Targeting cell cycle activation may be beneficial to slow down the NPC pathogenesis.

This paper discusses variations of laparoscopic transgastric cystogastrostomy in management of retrogastric pancreatic pseudocysts for 8 patients with symptom or pseudocysts (larger than 6 cm) companied with clinical manifestations. Using a Harmonic scalpel, two 3-5-cm incisions were made in the anterior and posterior gastric wall respectively. In the last step, the anterior gastrotomy was closed with an Endo-GIA stapler. All cases were successfully treated without large blood loss and without conversion to open surgery. The mean operative time was 114.29±19.24 min, blood loss was 157.14±78.70 mL, and mean hospital stay was 8.29±2.98 days. Gastric fistula occurred in one case on the postoperative day 7, and closed 1 month later. No bleeding was seen in all patients during the perioperative follow-up period. CT scans, given one month after the surgeries, displayed that the pancreatic pseudocysts disappeared or decreased in size, and ultrasounds showed no fluid or food residue in stomas at the third and fifth month following surgery. No patient experienced a recurrence during the follow-up period. Transgastric laparoscopic cystogastrostomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure with a high rate of success and a low rate of recurrence, accompanied by rapid recovery. It is easy to master, safe to perform and may be the preferred option to treat retrogastric pancreatic pseudocysts.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is a process by which aggressive tumor cells generate non-endothelial cell-lined channels in malignant tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It has provided new insights into tumor behavior and has surfaced as a potential target for drug therapy. The molecular events underlying the process of VM formation are still poorly understood. In this study, we attempted to elucidate the relationship between Notch4 and VM formation in HCC. An effective siRNA lentiviral vector targeting Notch4 was constructed and transfected into Bel7402, a HCC cell line. VM networks were observed with a microscope in a 3 dimensional cell culture system. Cell migration and invasion were evaluated using wound healing and transwell assays. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity was detected by gelatin zymography. Furthermore, the role of Notch4 inhibition in Bel7402 cells in vivo was examined in subcutaneous xenograft tumor model of mice. The results showed that downregulation of Notch4 destroyed VM network formation and inhibited migration and invasion of tumor cells in vitro (P<0.05). In vivo, tumor growth was also inhibited in subcutaneous xenograft model (P<0.05). The potential mechanisms might be related with down-regulation of MT1-MMP, MMP-2, MMP-9 expression and inhibition of the activation of MMP2 and MMP9. These results indicated that Notch4 may play an important role in VM formation and tumor invasion in HCC. Related molecular pathways may be used as novel therapeutic targets for HCC antiangiogenesis therapy.

Food intake has a great influence on blood glucose in patients with diabetes. This study was to determine the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) of a particular pomelo named Majia pomelo and its effects on postprandial glucose (PPG) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Twenty healthy subjects and 20 T2D patients (controlled on lifestyle measures and/or metformin) were tested on 2 separate days with 50 g of glucose and 50 g equivalent of carbohydrates from Majia pomelo for GI measurement. To test effects of Majia pomelo on PPG, 19 hospitalized T2D patients (controlled on insulin therapy) were selected for a 9-day study. The dose of insulin for each patient was adjusted on the first 3 days. A total of 100 mg Majia pomelo was consumed per meal in the last 3 tested days. Blood glucose was measured to evaluate the glycemic excursions. The GIs for Majia pomelo in healthy individuals and T2D patients were 78.34±1.88 and 72.15±1.95 respectively. The value of GL was as low as 4.23 in diabetic patients with serving size of 100 g pomelo, indicting Majia pomelo as a high GI but low GL fruit. Consumption of Majia pomelo in hospitalized T2D patients did not cause significant glucose fluctuation. It was concluded that high GI pomelo can serve as a low GL fruit if it is consumed with a limited daily amount and thus can be supplied to diabetic patients. These results may mean more varieties of food choices for T2D patients.

This study aimed to observe changes in the hydrogen sulfide (HS) system in the blood and liver tissue of rats with hepatic cirrhosis at different stages by studying the effect of HS on the course of hyperdynamic circulation in rats with hepatic cirrhosis. HS concentration in the blood from the portal vein and inferior vena cava of hepatic cirrhosis rat model induced with carbon tetrachloride was detected on the 15th, 30th, and 52nd day. The expression of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) protein, and CBS and CSE mRNA in the liver was detected by immunohistochemistry and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively. The results indicated that HS concentration in the blood from the portal vein and inferior vena cava of rats with hepatic cirrhosis was significantly lower than that in the control group. HS was gradually decreased with the development of the disease and significantly lower in the blood from portal vein than in the blood of inferior vena cava at the mid-stage and the late stage groups. The expression levels of CBS and CSE protein, and CBS and CSE mRNA in the livers with hepatic cirrhosis at different stages were all higher than those in the control group, and the expression gradually increased with the development of the disease. The expression of CBS was lower than CSE in the same stages. The results indicated that the CSE mRNA was expressed predominantly in the cirrhosis groups as compared with CBS mRNA. Among experimental rats, the HS system has an important effect on the occurrence and development of hyperdynamic circulation in rats with hepatic cirrhosis. This finding adds to the literature by demonstrating that HS protects vascular remodelling in the liver, and that CSE is indispensable in this process.

To investigate the role of signaling pathway in the effect of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) in endothelial cells stimulated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured and divided into 3 groups: CSE-stimulated group, CSE-stimulated with 4-PBA group, and negative control group. HUVECs were cultured and stimulated with CSE at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 20%, respectively, mRNA of CXCL-8 and GRP78 was detected by real-time PCR. ELISA was performed to test the expression of CXCL-8 protein, and neutrophils migration was detected by Transwell board test. The NF-κB, ERK, p38MAPK and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) were detected by flow cytometry. The mRNA of CXCL-8 and GRP78 increased in CSE-stimulated HUVECs (P<0.05). Furthermore, it was concentration-dependent. 4-PBA significantly reduced the expression of CXCL-8 protein (P<0.05) and neutrophil migration (P<0.05). The TGF-β, rather than the NF-κB, ERK and P38MAPK pathway might be involved in ER stress stimulated by CSE. CSE induced neutrophils migration by increasing the expression of CXCL-8 in endothelial cells. ER stress might play a role in the effect of neutrophils migration stimulated with CSE, and TGF-β pathway may contribute to the ER stress in HUVECs.

Relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) remains a main question on treatment failure. Current strategies for management that usually include salvage chemotherapy, donor lymphocytic infusion and second transplantation. Our study assessed the efficacy of decitabine (DAC) for treating patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who relapsed after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). We retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 12 patients with relapsed ALL after allo-HSCT who received DAC therapy. Nine patients received DAC combined with chemotherapy and donor stem cell infusion, and 3 patients received single- agent DAC. Ten of the 12 patients achieved complete remission (CR), 1 achieved a partial remission (PR), and 1 had no response (NR) after treatment at the latest follow-up (LFU), the median survival was 11.2 months (range, 3.8-34, 7 months). The 1- and 2-year overall survival (OS) rates were 50% (6/12) and 25% (3/12), respectively. Five patients were still alive; 4 had maintained CR and 1 was alive with disease. Patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive ALL had higher survival rate than patients with Philadelphia chromosome-negative ALL (57.1% vs. 20%). No aggravated flares of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) were observed during DAC treatment. Therefore, DAC may be a promising therapeutic agent for ALL recurrence after allo-HSCT.

China implemented the public hospital reform in 2012. This study utilized bootstrapping data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the technical efficiency (TE) and productivity of county public hospitals in Eastern, Central, and Western China after the 2012 public hospital reform. Data from 127 county public hospitals (39, 45, and 43 in Eastern, Central, and Western China, respectively) were collected during 2012-2015. Changes of TE and productivity over time were estimated by bootstrapping DEA and bootstrapping Malmquist. The disparities in TE and productivity among public hospitals in the three regions of China were compared by Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test. The average bias-corrected TE values for the four-year period were 0.6442, 0.5785, 0.6099, and 0.6094 in Eastern, Central, and Western China, and the entire country respectively, with average non-technical efficiency, low pure technical efficiency (PTE), and high scale efficiency found. Productivity increased by 8.12%, 0.25%, 12.11%, and 11.58% in China and its three regions during 2012-2015, and such increase in productivity resulted from progressive technological changes by 16.42%, 6.32%, 21.08%, and 21.42%, respectively. The TE and PTE of the county hospitals significantly differed among the three regions of China. Eastern and Western China showed significantly higher TE and PTE than Central China. More than 60% of county public hospitals in China and its three areas operated at decreasing return scales. There was a considerable space for TE improvement in county hospitals in China and its three regions. During 2012-2015, the hospitals experienced progressive productivity; however, the PTE changed adversely. Moreover, Central China continuously achieved a significantly lower efficiency score than Eastern and Western China. Decision makers and administrators in China should identify the causes of the observed inefficiencies and take appropriate measures to increase the efficiency of county public hospitals in the three areas of China, especially in Central China.

We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to investigate the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor (TIC) vs. clopidogrel (CLO) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In Jun 2016, a literature search was started and all the studies were conducted from 2010 to 2015. We systematically searched the literature through the MEDLINE database, Cochrane library, and EMBASE database. Quality assessments were evaluated with Jadad quality scale. Data were extracted considering the characteristics of efficacy and safety designs. Six RCTs enrolling 26 244 participants and satisfying the inclusion criteria were finally analyzed. There was a significant decrease of all-cause mortality (MD=0.83, 95%CI=0.74-0.93, P=0.001) and myocardial infarction (MI) (MD=0.78, 95%CI=0.70-0.88, P=0.000). There were no significant differences in stroke (MD=1.34, 95%CI=0.99-1.79, P=0.06), total bleeding (MD=0.97, 95%CI=0.84-1.12, P=0.66), minor or major bleeding (MD=1.06, 95%CI=0.94-1.19, P=0.35) in patients undergoing PCI after treatment with TIC vs. CLO. TIC could be more significant in decreasing all-cause mortality and MI than CLO, but there were no significant differences between TIC and CLO in inhibiting stroke, major bleeding, major or minor bleeding in patients undergoing PCI.

This meta-analysis compared the therapeutic effect of cable pin system (CPS) with K-wire tension band (KTB) in the treatment of patella fractures among Chinese Han population. The databases of PubMed, Cochrane library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese WanFang and Chinese VIP were searched for studies on CPS versus KTB in the treatment of patella fractures among Chinese Han population. Literatures were screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the studies was assessed, and meta-analysis was performed using the Cochrane Collaboration's REVMAN 5.3 software. A total of 932 patients from 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis (426 fractures treated with CPS and 506 fractures treated with KTB). There were significant differences in duration of hospital stay [mean difference (MD)=-1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI):-1.71 to-0.43], fracture healing time (MD=-1.23; 95% CI:-1.68 to-0.77), flexion degree of knee joint at 6th month after operation (MD=14.82; 95% CI: 10.93 to 18.71), incidence of postoperative complication [risk ratio (RR)=0.16; 95% CI: 0.09 to 0.27] and excellent-good rate of Böstman score (RR=1.09; 95% CI: 1.03 to 1.16) between the CPS group and KTB group, while no significant difference was found in operative time between the two groups (MD=-4.52; 95% CI:-11.70 to 2.67). For the treatment of patella fractures among Chinese Han population, limited evidence suggests that the CPS is more suitable than the KTB when considering the hospital stay, fracture healing time, flexion degree of knee at 6th month after operation, incidence of postoperative complication and excellent-good rate of Böstman joint score. Due to the limitation of high quality evidence and sample size, more large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to validate the findings in the future.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between the protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and lymph node metastasis (LNM) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). VEGF-related articles that had been published until August 2016 were searched from the PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE to identify the risk factors of LNM in PTC. RevMan 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis. Finally, 9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in our meta-analysis. LNM was found to be present in 176 of 318 patients (57.8%) with high VEGF expression and in 71 of 159 patients (47.0%) with low VEGF expression. The overall OR was 2.81 (95% confidence interval, 1.49-5.29). LNM occurred more frequently in patients with high VEGF expression than in those with low VEGF expression (P=0.001). Heterogeneity was markedly decreased in the subgroup analyses of LNM in terms of the patients' country of origin and the detection methods. Our meta- analysis concluded that the VEGF protein expression is associated with LNM in PTC.

To perform a systemic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of PET (CT) and metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) for diagnosing neuroblastoma (NB), electronic databases were searched as well as relevant references and conference proceedings. The diagnostic accuracy of MIBG and PET (CT) was calculated for NB, primary NB, and relapse/metastasis of NB based on their sensitivity, specificity, and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUSROC) in terms of per-lesion and per-patient data. A total of 40 eligible studies comprising 1134 patients with 939 NB lesions were considered for the meta-analysis. For the staging of NB, the per-lesion AUSROC value of MIBG was lower than that of PET (CT) [0.8064±0.0414 vs. 0.9366±0.0166 (P<0.05)]. The per-patient AUSROC value of MIBG and PET (CT) for the diagnosis of NB was 0.8771±0.0230 and 0.6851±0.2111, respectively. The summary sensitivity for MIBG and PET (CT) was 0.79 and 0.89, respectively. The summary specificity for MIBG and PET (CT) was 0.84 and 0.71, respectively. PET (CT) showed higher per-lesion accuracy than MIBG and might be the preferred modality for the staging of NB. On the other hand, MIBG has a comparable diagnosing performance with PET (CT) in per-patient analysis but shows a better specificity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the existence and extent of cognitive impairment in adult diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with episodes of recurrent severe hypoglycemia, by using meta-analysis to synthesize data across studies. PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane library search engines were used to identify studies on cognitive performance in DM patients with recurrent severe hypoglycemia. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed on seven eligible studies using an inverse-variance method. Effect sizes, which are the standardized differences between the experimental group and the control group, were calculated. Of the 853 studies, 7 studies met the inclusion criteria. Compared with control subjects, the adult DM patients with episodes of recurrent severe hypoglycemia demonstrated a significantly lowered performance on memory in both types of DM patients, and poor performance of processing speed in type 2 DM patients. There was no significant difference between adult DM patients with and those without severe hypoglycemia in other cognitive domains such as general intelligence, executive function, processing speed and psychomotor efficiency. Our results seem to confirm the hypothesis that cognitive dysfunction is characterized by worse memory and processing speed in adult DM patients with a history of recurrent severe hypoglycemia, whereas general intelligence, executive function, and psychomotor efficiency are spared.

Current treatments for cancer and the central nervous system diseases are limited, partly due to the difficulties posed by the insolubility, poor distribution of drugs among cells and lack of selectivity of drugs, the inability of drugs to cross cellular barriers and blood brain barrier (BBB). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess many distinct properties including good electronic properties, remarkably penetrating capability on the cell membrane, high drug-loading and pH-dependent therapeutic unloading capacities, thermal properties, large surface area and easy modification with molecules, which render them as a suitable candidate to deliver drugs to cancer and brain. CNTs as a drug delivery could achieve a high efficacy, enhance specificity and diminish side effects. Whereas CNTs have been primarily employed in cancer treatment, a few studies have focused on the treatment and diagnosis of the central nervous system diseases using CNTs. Here, we review the current progress of in vitro and in vivo researches of CNTs-based drug delivery to cancer involving CNTs-based tumor-targeted drug delivery systems (DDS), photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). Meanwhile, we also review the current progress of in vitro and in vivo researches of CNTs-based drug delivery to brain.

This study was to determine the protective effect of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3PUFAs) on MK-801-induced cognitive impairment in schizophrenia (SZ) rats and the underlying mechanism. A rat model of schizophrenia was induced by MK-801. The cognitive function of rats was assessed using a Morris water maze. The number of hippocampal neurons was measured by Nissl staining. The expression of CREB, p-CREB, BDNF, TrkB, p-TrkB, AKT, p-AKT, ERK, and p-ERK in the hippocampus of rats was detected by Western blotting. The results showed that ω-3PUFAs attenuated MK-801-induced cognitive impairment and hippocampal neurons loss, reversed the injury of the CREB/BDNF/TrkB pathway induced by MK-801, and antagonized MK-801-induced down-regulation of p-AKT and p-ERK in the hippocampus of rats. In conclusion, ω-3PUFAs enhances the CREB/BDNF/TrkB pathway by activating ERK and AKT, thereby increasing the synaptic plasticity and decreasing neuron loss, and antagonizing MK-801-induced cognitive impairment in schizophrenic rats.

The expression of miR-20 was detected by real-time PCR. Myocardiocytes were stained with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TU-NEL) reagent for apoptosis evaluation. Western blotting was used to detect the Kir6.1 protein in ischemic myocardiocytes transfected with miR-20 mimics or inhibitors. Luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to confirm the targeting effect of miR-20 on KCNJ8. The results showed that miR-20 was remarkably down-regulated, while the KATP subunit Kir6.1 was significantly up-regulated, during myocardial ischemia. The miR-20 overexpression promoted the apoptosis of ischemic myocardiocytes, but showed no such effect on normal cells. Under ischemic condition, myocardiocytes transfected with miR-20 mimics expressed less Kir6.1. On the contrary, inhibiting miR-20 increased the expression of Kir6.1 in the cells. Co-transfection of miR-20 mimics with the KCNJ8 3'-UTR plasmid into HEK293 cells consistently produced less luciferase activity than transfection of the plasmid alone. It was concluded that miR-20 may regulate myocardiac ischemia by targeting KATP subunit Kir6.1 to accelerate the cell apoptosis. Therefore miR-20 may serve as a therapeutic target for myocardial ischemic disease.

Erythroderma with complicated etiology is one of the severe skin diseases and has high mortality, of which the incidence was 0.5‰-1.5‰ in skin diseases. Erythrodermic psoriasis (EP) is the commonest type of erythroderma. In addition, there are drug-induced erythroderma, erythroderma secondary to preexisting dermatoses, malignancy-related erythroderma, and idiopathic erythroderma of unknown etiology. Erythroderma of different etiologies has various clinical manifestations, resulting in relevant curative effects and outcomes. In this article, we retrospectively investigated 205 erythroderma patients about clinical symptoms, auxiliary examination and treatments, and evaluated the efficacy and prognosis. There were 84 cases of EP among 205 patients, 10 cases of erythroderma caused by specific drugs, 77 cases of erythroderma secondary to preexisting dermatoses (excluding psoriasis), 7 cases of erythroderma patients suffering from malignancy and 27 cases with unknown causes. We concluded that the etiology of male patients in different age groups had significant difference. The incidence of EP was the highest among all types. The EP was commonly accompanied with hypoproteinemia, and changed into psoriasis vulgaris after treatment. Drug-induced erythroderma was commonly accompanied with fever, and mostly cured by systematic steroid therapy. For erythroderma secondary to preexisting dermatoses, the original dermatoses must be actively treated to achieve a satisfying prognosis. Erythroderma with malignancy or unknown causes had long-term duration, poor response to the treatment, and high potential to relapse. Therefore, clarifying the etiology, providing an appropiate and individual regimen, and regular follow-up are crucial for the successful treatment of erythroderma with unknown causes.

The post-operative patellar tendon length was studied to evaluate the possible tendon length change after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring autografts. The Insall-Salvati index, modified Insall-Salvati index, curved modified Insall-Salvati index and Caton-Deschamps index were observed by MRI during a follow-up period of 12 weeks on 20 ACL reconstructed knees. The results showed no patellar baja or alta pre-existed on those ACL injured patients. After a follow-up period of 12 weeks, no patellar tendon length change was observed. It is suggested that the change of patella was not the primary reason that may contribute to the premature patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis after ACL reconstruction.

The clinical value of transvaginal ultrasound in clinical surgical treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) was evaluated. The clinical data of 104 patients with CSP admitted at Tongji Hospital from 2013 to 2016 were collected and analyzed retrospectively, including the patients' age, gestational age, the size of gestational sac or uneven mass, the uterine scar thickness, β human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels and so on. Of these 104 cases, 30 cases were subjected to laparotomy, 29 cases to laparoscopy, 27 cases to hysteroscopy, 16 cases to ultrasound-guided uterine curettage, and 2 cases to conservative treatment. The transvaginal ultrasound showed that uterine scar thickness and gestational sac or uneven mass size had significant difference (P<0.05) among different surgical methods by comparatively analyzing the patients' data. It was suggested that transvaginal ultrasound may provide the valuable reference for choosing clinical surgical procedures for CSP.
