The purpose of this study was to assess the differences in clinical and sonographic features of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) between cervical lymph node metastatic (CLNM) and nonmetastatic groups. Clinical data of PTC patients (414 patients with 624 malignant nodules) who underwent a preoperative ultrasonography and surgery between June 2010 and March 2015 at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical factors, preoperative ultrasound features and the final pathological findings were obtained. The differences in the sonographic features of PTC between the CLNM group and the non-CLNM group were analyzed. There were 187 CLNM and 227 non-CLNM patients. The median age at the diagnosis of this cohort was 45.4 years old (ranging from 18 to 77 years). Ultrasonographic parameters that were significantly associated with CLNM [OR=2.569 (1.502, 4.393), P<0.001)] were as follows: the mulifocality of the nodules, size over 2 cm, the presence of microcalcifications, the distance ratio (DR) pattern showing the contact of the nodules with the thyroid capsule, and the extracapsular spread of the nodules. No significant differences in age, gender, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and other ultrasonography parameters were found between the CLNM and the non-CLNM groups. Therefore, our results suggest that a larger size, microcalcifications, mulifocality, and the DR pattern showing the contact of the nodules with the thyroid capsule and extracapsular spread are significantly more indicative of CLNM in PTC.

Reproductive health (RH) education and services of female migrants in China have become an important health issue. This research aimed to investigate the RH knowledge and utilization among married female migrants, and to explore the influencing factors from the perspectives of population and sociology. We conducted a cross-section survey in Shenzhen and Wuhan, China, using the purposive sampling method. A total of 1021 rural-to-urban married migrants were recruited, with 997 valid survey results obtained. A face-to-face structured questionnaire survey was used, with primary focus on knowledge of fertility, contraception, family planning policy and sexual transmitted diseases/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (STD/AIDs), and RH service utilization. The results showed that the RH service utilization (38.0%) was at a low level in married migrants and the accessibility of RH service was poor. Females who migrated to (OR=0.32) Wuhan obtained fewer RH consultations than those in Shenzhen. The workers with high school education received additional RH consultations and checkup services than those with other background education, apart from the white collar workers who received extra RH consultations and checkup services than the blue collar workers (P<0.05). We can draw a conclusion that the utilization of RH services in married female migrants remains at a low level in China. RH service utilization can be improved via the relevant health departments by enhancing the responsibility of maternal and health care in the community health service center.

They are involved in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. The aim of this study was to explore the microRNA-mRNA regulatory network in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) using comprehensive computational approaches. In this study we have selected a total of 11 miRNAs from one previously reported study in ESCC. The mRNA targets of these miRNAs were predicted using various algorithms. The expression profiles of these mRNA targets were identified on DNA microarray experiment dataset across ESCC tissue samples. Based on the miRNA-mRNA regulatory relationships, the network was inferred. A total of 23 miRNA-mRNA regulatory interactions, with 11 miRNAs and 13 mRNA targets, were inferred in ESCC. The miRNA-mRNA regulatory network with increased confidence provides insights into the progression of ESCC and may serve as a biomarker for prognosis or the aggressiveness of ESCC. However, the results should be examined with further experimental validation.

Several studies have addressed the risk factors for postoperative pleural effusion. However, there are no researches concerning the role of the initial 12-h operative fluid volume. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the initial 12-h operative fluid volume during liver resection is an independent risk factor for pleural effusion after hepatectomy. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 470 patients consecutively undergoing elective hepatectomy between January 2011 and December 2012. We prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed baseline and clinical data, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to identify whether the initial 12-h operative fluid volume was an independent risk factor for pleural effusion after hepatectomy. The multivariate analysis identified 2 independent risk factors for pleural effusion: operative time [odds ratio (OR)=10.2] and initial 12-h operative fluid volume (OR=1.0003). Threshold effect analyses revealed that the initial 12 h operative fluid volume was positively correlated with the incidence of pleural effusion when the initial 12-h operative fluid volume exceeded 4636 mL. We conclude that the initial 12-h operative fluid volume during liver resection and operative time are independent risk factors for pleural effusion after hepatectomy. Perioperative intravenous fluids should be restricted properly.

This study investigated the molecular markers of DS-1-47, a component of an implantation- promoting traditional Chinese medicine consisting of Astragalus mongholicus, Atractylodes macrocephala, Scutellaria baicalensis and Dipsacales, in an attempt to clarify the molecular mechanism and action targets of DS-1-47. Controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) method was used to establish the implantation dysfunction models of mice. Animals were divided into normal pregnant group, COS model group and DS-1-47 group. Laser capture microdissection-double dimensional electrophoresis-mass spectrum (LCM-DE-MS) was used to analyze the uterine protein molecules that were possibly involved in the promotion of implantation. Twenty-three proteins in DS-1-47 group were significantly changed as compared to those in COS model group, with 7 proteins down-regulated and 16 proteins up-regulated. Except for some constituent proteins, the down-regulated proteins included collagen α-1 (VI) chain, keratin 7, keratin 14, myosin regulatory light chain 12B, myosin light polypeptide 9, heat shock protein β-7, and C-U-editing enzyme APOBEC-2; the up-regulated proteins included apolipoprotein A-I, calcium regulated protein-3, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, L-xylulose reductase, and calcium binding protein. These 23 proteins that were regulated by DS-1-47 represented a broad diversity of molecule functions. The down-regulated proteins were associated with stress and immune response, and those up-regulated proteins were related to proliferation. It was suggested that these proteins were important in regulating the uterine environment for the blastocyst implantation. By identification of DS-1-47 markers, proteomic analysis coupled with functional assays is demonstrated to be a promising approach to better understand the molecular mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine.

This study investigated the effect of diosgenin, a natural sapogenin possessing various pharmacological activities, on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in rats and the possible mechanisms. BPH was established in the castrated rats by subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate. Animals were randomly divided into four groups (n=10 each): model group (0.5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose); positive control group (3 mg/kg finasteride); two diosgenin groups (50 and 100 mg/kg). The drugs were intragastricaly given in each group for consecutive 3 weeks. Another 10 rats with no testicles cut off served as negative controls and they were subcutaneously injected with 0.1 mL olive oil per day and then treated with 0.5% sodium carboxymethylcellulose. After 3-week administration, the prostate index and serum PSA level were determined, and histopathological examination was carried out. The levels of MDA, SOD and GPx in prostates were also measured. Additionally, the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and p53 was examined using Western blotting. The results showed that the prostate index and serum PSA level were significantly decreased, and the pathological changes of the prostate gland were greatly improved in diosgenin groups as compared with the model group. Elevated activities of SOD and GPx, and reduced MDA level were also observed in diosgenin-treated rats. In addition, the expression of Bcl-2 in prostates was down-regulated, whereas that of Bax and p53 was up-regulated in diosgenin-treated rats. These results indicated that diosgenin was effective in inhibiting testosterone propionate-induced prostate enlargement and may be a candidate agent for the treatment of BPH.

The safety and effectiveness of a novel Chinese one-shot dilation technique based on stimulated diuresis for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) were investigated. After the feasibility of the Chinese one-shot dilation based on stimulated diuresis was verified by an animal study, this technique was applied in the clinical practice. A total of 67 patients in our department underwent the modified PCNL from July 2014 to June 2015. After the renal infundibulum was distended by stimulated diuresis, the kidney was punctured under the ultrasonographic guidance via the fornix of the target calyx. The working channel was dilated using a special designed pencil-shaped fascial dilator. The successful access rate, nephrostomy tract creation time, pre- and postoperative hemoglobin values and serum creatinine concentrations, stone-free rate and complications were recorded and analyzed. The renal infundibulum was successfully distended in all of the patients by the diuresis treatment. Under the ultrasonographic guidance, the successful access rate was 100% and the mean tract creation time was 2.0 min (range: 1.5-5.0 min). The stone-free rate right after surgery was 91.0%. Although the postoperative hemoglobin was significantly reduced (P<0.01), transfusion was not clinically necessary. There was no significant difference in serum creatinine concentrations before and after operation (P>0.05). No severe complication occurred during or after the PCNL. It was suggested that this Chinese one-shot dilation technique based on stimulated diuresis is an efficient and safe innovation for PCNL, and is even helpful for those patients with non-dilated pelvicaliceal systems.

Neurofibrillary pathology of abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β) signaling pathway is pivotal for tau phosphorylation. Inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) metabolism has been shown to effectively increase the accumulation of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which are cytochrome P450 metabolites of arachidonic acid and have been demonstrated to have neuroprotective effects. However, little is known about the role of sEH in tau phosphorylation. The present study investigated the role of a sEH inhibitor, 1-(1-propanoylpiperidin-4-yl)-3-[4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl] urea (TPPU), on HO-induced tau phosphorylation and the underlying signaling pathway in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293)/Tau cells. We found that the cell viability was increased after TPPU treatment compared to control in oxidative stress. Western blotting and immunofluorescence results showed that the levels of phosphorylated tau at Thr231 and Ser396 sites were increased in HO-treated cells but dropped to normal levels after TPPU administration. HO induced an obvious decreased phosphorylation of GSK-3β at Ser9, an inactive form of GSK-3β, while there were no changes of phosphorylation of GSK-3β at Tyr216. TPPU pretreatment maintained GSK-3β Ser 9 phosphorylation. Moreover, Western blotting results showed that TPPU upregulated the expression of p-Akt. The protective effects of TPPU were found to be inhibited by wortmannin (WT, a specific PI3K inhibitor). In conclusion, these results suggested that the protective effect of TPPU on HO-induced oxidative stress is associated with PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β pathway.

Giant hiatal hernia (GHH) comprises 5% of hiatal hernia and is associated with significant complications. The traditional operative procedure, no matter transthoracic or transabdomen repair of giant hiatal hernia, is characteristic of more invasion and more complications. Although laparoscopic repair as a minimally invasive surgery is accepted, a part of patients can not tolerate pneumoperitoneum because of combination with cardiopulmonary diseases or severe posterior mediastinal and neck emphesema during operation. The aim of this article was to analyze our experience in gasless laparoscopic repair with abdominal wall lifting to treat the giant hiatal hernia. We performed a retrospective review of patients undergoing gasless laparoscopic repair of GHH with abdominal wall lifting from 2012 to 2015 at our institution. The GHH was defined as greater than one-third of the stomach in the chest. Gasless laparoscopic repair of GHH with abdominal wall lifting was attempted in 27 patients. Mean age was 67 years. The results showed that there were no conversions to open surgery and no intraoperative deaths. The mean duration of operation was 100 min (range: 90-130 min). One-side pleura was injured in 4 cases (14.8%). The mean postoperative length of stay was 4 days (range: 3-7 days). Median follow- up was 26 months (range: 6-38 months). Transient dysphagia for solid food occurred in three patients (11.1%), and this symptom disappeared within three months. There was one patient with recurrent hiatal hernia who was reoperated on. Two patients still complained of heartburn three months after surgery. Neither reoperation nor endoscopic treatment due to signs of postoperative esophageal stenosis was required in any patient. Totally, satisfactory outcome was reported in 88.9% patients. It was concluded that the gasless laparoscopic approach with abdominal wall lifting to the repair of GHH is feasible, safe, and effective for the patients who cannot tolerate the pneumoperitoneum.

Although the clinical benefit of laparoscopic splenectomy and devascularization (LSD) has been elaborated in many studies, its application in massive splenomegaly remains controversial. We conducted a retrospective research to assess the curative efficacy of LSD for massive splenomegaly due to portal hypertension. Forty-seven patients with massive splenomegaly due to portal hypertension were enrolled in this study, and divided into two groups. Twenty-one patients underwent open splenectomy and devascularization (OSD) from June 2010 to October 2012 (OSD group). From March 2013 to February 2015, LSD was performed on 26 patients (LSD group). Perioperative variables were analyzed. Compared to OSD, LSD was associated with less blood loss (241.9±110.0 mL vs. 319.0±139.5 mL, P<0.05), more rapid resumption of oral diet (2.46±0.95 days vs. 3.76±1.09 days, P<0.05), and shorter postoperative hospital stay (5.35±1.65 days vs. 7.24±1.55 days, P<0.05). It was concluded that for patients with massive splenomegaly due to portal hypertension, LSD is feasible and as safe as OSD.

To better understand the outcomes of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), we examined the clinical features and prognostic factors of SCLC in this study. A total of 148 patients who were diagnosed as having SCLC between January 2009 and December 2013 in Cancer Center of Union Hospital, Wuhan, China, were enrolled and their clinical features and prognostic factors were retrospectively analyzed. Log-rank test and Cox regression model were employed for analysis of prognostic factors. The 1- and 2-year overall survival (OS) rates were 59.7% and 25.7%, respectively, for limited disease (LD) patients whose median survival time (MST) was 16 months. The 1- and 2-year OS rates were 29.5% and 5.3%, respectively, for extensive disease (ED) patients whose MST was 10 months. The univariate analysis and multivariate analysis revealed that age, tumor stage, serum CEA and Ki-67 antigen were significantly correlated to the outcomes of SCLC, and they were significant prognostic factors for SCLC.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play key roles in the pathogenesis of RCC. The role of miR-206 in RCC has not been fully understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of miR-206 in the regulation of proliferation and metastasis of RCC and the possible mechanism. miR-206 expression was detected by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in RCC cell lines (786-O and OS-RC-2 cells) and clinical samples. MTS [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium] method, colony formation and transwell assay were used to detect the tumor-suppressing ability of miR-206 in RCC. Luciferase assay was performed to verify the precise target of miR-206. The results showed that the expression of miR-206 was significantly down-regulated in RCC tissues and cells. The expression level of cyclin G-associated kinase (GAK), a master regulator of tumor proliferation and metastasis, was up-regulated with the decrease in miR-206 in RCC tissues as well as RCC cell lines. In addition, the miR-206 inhibitor promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of 786-O and OS-RC-2 cells. Bioinformatics combined with luciferase and Western blot assays revealed that miR-206 inhibited the expression of GAK. Moreover, miR-206 regulates RCC cell growth partly through targeting GAK. Our study indicated that miR-206 functions as a tumor suppressor in regulating the proliferation, migration and invasion of RCC by directly targeting GAK, and it holds promises as a potential therapeutic target for RCC.

The study aimed to examine the applicability of carbon nanoparticles as a tracer for lymph node mapping and the related factors of lymph node and No.8p subgroup metastasis in patients with gastric cancer. Clinical data of 50 patients with gastric cancer, who had not received treatment preoperatively and underwent gastrectomy in Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Wuhan Union Hospital, between October 2014 and August 2015, were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were found to have no distant metastasis preoperatively. Thirty-five out of 50 patients were subjected to lymphatic mapping technique using carbon nanoparticles as the tracer, and the rest 15 cases did not experience the lymphatic mapping and served as controls. The sensitivity, specificity, false positive rate and false negative rate were calculated according to the number of lymph nodes, and the staining and metastasis condition of lymph nodes. The diagnostic value of carbon nanoparticles on metastatic lymph nodes was evaluated. The relationship between the metastasis of lymph nodes or subgroup No.8p lymph nodes and clinicopathologic features was analyzed by χ-test or Fisher's exact test. All patients underwent D2 surgery (lymph node dissection including all the group 1 and group 2 nodes) plus the dissection of the subgroup No.8p lymph nodes. It was found that the average number of harvested lymph nodes in lymphatic mapping technique group (45.7±14.5) was greater than that in control group (39.2±11.7), but the difference was not significantly different (P=0.138>0.05). The success rate, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and false negative rate was 97%, 57%, 28%, 62% and 72% respectively. The metastasis of lymph nodes was correlated to the depth of cancer invasion (T stage) (P=0.004<0.05), and the metastasis of No.8p lymph nodes was correlated to the extent of lymph node involvement (N stage) (P=0.007<0.05). Six cases had lymph node metastasis in subgroup No.8p, and their TNM stages and clinical stages were as follows: T1N2M0 IIA, T3N3M0 IIIB, T4aN3M0 IIIC, T4aN3M0 IIIC, T4aN3M0 IIIC, and T4bN3M0 IIIC. In conclusion, our study indicated that carbon nanoparticles failed to show good selectivity for metastatic lymph nodes; the result of lymphatic mapping does not achieve a satisfactory performance; the incidence of lymph node metastasis may increase, accompanying with the increase of the depth of cancer invasion; No.8p lymph node metastasis tends to occur for gastric carcinoma patients with the extent of lymph node metastasis over N2 stage.

Many eating behaviors form in childhood, and some unhealthy behaviors may persist into adulthood and have potential impacts on people's health. This study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral intervention in reducing consumption of Western fast food, sweetened beverages, fried food in preschool children, and changing parents' rewarding behaviors that encourage the consumption of the unhealthy foods. The research was a cluster randomized trial of seven kindergartens, involving 1138 children aged 3-6 years and their parents in Beijing, China. Parents and children allocated to the intervention group received two lectures and printed resources, including behavior cards, educational sheets. Children's behavior cards, applied with behavior-changing techniques, were used to intervene, and monitor behavior changes over time. Children in the control group just followed their usual health education curriculum in kindergartens. Intervention effects on food consumption behaviors were assessed by examining pre- and post-questionnaires. Of the 1138 children screened at baseline, 880 (77.3%) were measured at the end of the intervention period. The intervention lasted from March to June in 2010. The results showed that consumption of Western fast food, sweetened beverages, and fried food was decreased among the intervention group (P<0.001). Proportions of parents using Western fast food as rewards for their children were decreased (P=0.002). From March to June 2010, the frequency of each target behavior in children tended to decrease over the intervention period (P<0.001). Most parents favored regularly-delivered behavior cards or materials for behavioral intervention. In conclusion, the behavioral intervention encourages the healthier eating behaviors of children and reduces the parents' practice of using unhealthy foods as reward.

Unfortunately, most NSCLC patients inevitably develop gefitinib resistance during treatment. In addition to EGFR mutation status, the mechanisms involved are largely unknown. In this study, we showed that miR-124, a tumor suppressor, was significantly down-regulated in gefitinib-resistant NSCLC patients and cell lines compared with gefitinib-sensitive patients and cell lines. In addition, the miR-124 depletion induced gefitinib resistance, and miR-124 overexpression sensitized gefitinib-resistant cells to gefitinib. Mechanistic analysis revealed that miR-124 decreased SNAI2 and STAT3 expression by directly targeting their 3'UTRs and that knocking down SNAI2 or STAT3 partly reversed the gefitinib resistance induced by miR-124 depletion. Our data demonstrate that the miR-124 plays a new critical role in acquired resistance to gefitinib and that the manipulation of miR-124 might provide a therapeutic strategy for reversing acquired gefitinib resistance.

Adjacent vertebral fractures are common in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) after kyphoplasty. This finite element study was to examine whether short segment pedicle screw fixation (PSF) with kyphoplasty may decrease the fracture risk of the treated and adjacent non-treated vertebrae after kyphoplasty for OVCFs. By simulating cement augmentation with or without short segment pedicle screw fixation (PSF), two tridimensional, anatomically detailed finite element models of the T10-L2 functional spinal junction were developed. The insertion of pedicle screws into the intact vertebra apparently decreased the stress distribution of the treated vertebra in vertical compression and other load situations. The stress distribution in the bone structures of the intact vertebra adjacent to the intact-screwed vertebra was much less than that in the one adjacent to the treated vertebra. The insertion of pedicle screws into the intact vertebra greatly decreased the maximum displacement of the cortical bones and cancellous bones of the vertebrae. Our results indicated that short segment PSF with kyphoplasty may decrease the fracture risk of the treated and adjacent non-treated vertebrae in the management of OVCFs.

This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI) among perimenopausal women in Wuhan. A cross-sectional survey was performed on 1067 women aged 40-65 years sampled in Wuhan urban area from April to October 2014. Information about demographic characteristics, menstruation, parity and UI symptoms was collected using a questionnaire. The data were evaluated by Chi-square test and multiple Logistic regression analysis. The prevalence rate of UI was 37.2%, with stress UI (32.2%) being more prevalent than urgency UI (21.6%) and mixed UI (16.6%). 31.2% women with UI stated that UI had negative impact on their life. Risk factors for UI included menstrual disorder, menopause, overweight, perineal laceration, atrophic vaginitis, constipation and pelvic organ prolapse. Appropriate investigation apropos the factors associated with UI should be performed to diminish its impact on women's life.

Epidemiological studies have shown that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allelic polymorphisms are closely correlated to susceptibility to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and in a previous study, we showed that HLA-B*46 and HLA-A*02-B*46 haplotypes were strongly associated with NPC susceptibility. In this retrospective study, we investigated the phenotype of the HLA-A and HLA-B alleles and haplotypes and correlated these data to the clinical and pathological parameters of NPC to understand the role of HLA alleles and haplotypes in NPC prognosis. The cohort comprised 117 NPC patients from a Han population in Xinjiang. The local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), distant metastasis- free survival (DMFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. The 5-year DMFS of the HLA-A*02-B*46 haplotype carriers and non-carriers was 66.4% and 90.3%, respectively. In addition, age was found to be a prognostic factor for LRFS, DFS, and OS (P=0.032, 0.040, and 0.013, respectively). We found that the HLA-A*02-B*46 haplotype might be a prognostic marker in addition to the traditional TNM staging in patients with NPC.

The purpose of the study was to observe changes in endolymphatic hydrops by using intratympanic injection of gadolinium and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after endolymphatic sac surgery in patients with unilateral Meniere's disease. Thirteen patients with unilateral Meniere's disease undergoing endolymphatic sac surgery were retrospectively and prospectively analyzed. Three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery or three-dimensional real inversion recovery MRI was performed 24 h after an intratympanic injection of gadolinium to grade the presence of endolymphatic hydrops. Among the 13 patients with hydrops confirmed by preoperative MRI, vestibular hydrops had no significant change in all patients; cochlear hydrops became negative in 2 patients, and remained unchanged in the other 11 patients after surgery. Definite vertigo attacks were substantially controlled in one patient and completely controlled in 12 patients during a follow-up period of 8-34 months after surgery. The hearing levels were improved in 3 patients, remained unchanged in 7 patients, and decreased in 3 patients. In conclusion, endolymphatic sac surgery does not always alleviate endolymphatic hydrops in patients with Meniere's disease. Relief from vertigo cannot always be attributed to the remission of hydrops. A change in hearing levels cannot be explained by hydrops status alone.

We aimed to investigate the differences in renal histopathological changes and laboratory parameters between adult and pediatric patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN), and to analyze the correlation between laboratory parameters and renal histopathological grading. A total of 139 patients diagnosed with HSPN between September 2010 and December 2014 at the First Hospital of Jilin University, China, were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical and pathological characteristics were examined and compared between the adult and the pediatric patients. A majority of adult (75.0%) and pediatric (66.2%) patients were categorized as pathological grade III HSPN. Adults having crescent lesions, interstitial fibrosis and renal artery involvement significantly outnumbered child counterparts (all P<0.05). Pathological grading showed a positive correlation with 24-h urine protein (r=0.307, P=0.009), microalbuminuria (r=0.266, P=0.000) and serum globulin (r=0.307, P=0.014), and a negative correlation with serum albumin (r=0.249, P=0.037) in pediatric patients with HSPN. Among adult patients with HSPN, histopathological grading showed a positive correlation with 24-h urine protein (r=0.294, P=0.015), microalbuminuria (r=0.352, P=0.006), α1-microglobulin (r=0.311, P=0.019) and immunoglobulin G (r=0.301, P=0.023) in urine, and serum creatinine (r=0.292, P=0.018). Further, a negative correlation between serum albumin and pathological grading was also observed (r=0.291, P=0.018). In conclusion, the severity of renal pathological lesions in HSPN patients is well reflected by the levels of proteinuria. Adult patients have more severe renal histopathological changes than pediatric patients.
