We aimed to assess the changes in nutritional status and disease progr...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A comprehensive nutritional management is necessary for favourable outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to assess the changes in nutritional status and disease progression with nutritional management where renal replacement therapy (RRT) was not in place. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A quasi-experiment intervention was conducted on 70 CKD patients at stages 3-5 from July to December 2022. Participants were excluded if they underwent RRT, including dialy-sis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis), or kidney transplantation. The nutritional regimen covered nutrition-al counseling, samples of the dietary menu, and supplement products. We evaluated nutritional status using Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) scale and sub-clinical blood test at T0 (hospital admission) and T1 (two weeks after the admission or 24 hours before the discharge). RESULTS: After the intervention, the number of patients classified as malnutrition or at risk of malnourished reduced significantly (65.7% to 54.3% and 25.7% and 5.7%, respectively). The serum concentration of urea, creatinine and parathyroid hormone decreased remarkably, especially in patients receiving nutritional management. In the intervention group, the dietary pattern provided increased intakes of calcium and iron at T1, while phosphorus, sodium and potassium decreased after follow-up. Nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness and sleep disorders were improved in the intervention compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional therapy enhanced the nutritional sta-tus, and quality of dietary and renal function in CKD patients without RRT. Applying nutrition education and treatment at an early stage can slow CKD progression, which should be applicable elsewhere in Vietnam.

This study aims to identify the complications, changes in anthropometry, adherence to dietary recommendations, and psycho...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bariatric surgery becomes the final option for managing severe obesity. This study aims to identify the complications, changes in anthropometry, adherence to dietary recommendations, and psychological well-being of post-bariatric surgery patients. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: An observational study was conducted on 63 post-bariatric surgery patients who had undergone bariatric surgery between two weeks and five years after surgery. The participants were assessed for the complications experienced, current comorbidities, anthropometric changes, dietary intake, and psychological well-being. A three-day, 24-hour diet recall was done to assess the dietary intake of the patients. The mean macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were compared to several available recommendations. The DASS-21 questionnaire was administered to determine the psychological well-being of the participants. RESULTS: The most common complications experienced by patients after bariatric surgery were hair loss (50.8%), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (49.2%), and vomiting (41.3%). There were significant differences in mean weight before (129.5 (33.0) kg/m2) and after (85.0 (32.0) kg/m2) bariatric surgery (p<0.001). The prevalence of clinically severe obesity declined by 55%. Overall, patients had insufficient intake of some nutrients such as protein, fat, calcium, and iron. Majority of the patients experienced a normal level of stress, anxiety, and depression, but some had mild (3.2%), moderate (4.8%), and severe anxiety (1.6%). CONCLUSIONS: There were drastic improvements in patients' weight following bariatric surgery. However, there were several complications including nutrient deficiencies. Due to the anatomical changes in the gastrointestinal tract, patients must comply with the dietary and lifestyle changes and follow up with the healthcare professional. A nutrition module will be helpful for patients to prepare for and adapt to the changes after bariatric surgery.

There is g...Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies and the leading causes of cancer related deaths worldwide. The development of CRC is driven by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is growing evidence that changes in dietary nutrition may modulate the CRC risk, and protective effects on the risk of developing CRC have been advocated for specific nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, lipid, vitamins, micronutrients and prebiotics. Metabolic crosstalk between tumor cells, tumor microenvironment components and intestinal flora further promote proliferation, invasion and metastasis of CRC cells and leads to treatment resistance. This review summarizes the research progress on CRC prevention, pathogenesis, and treatment by dietary supplementation or deficiency of glucose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, micronutri-ents, and prebiotics, respectively. The roles played by different nutrients and dietary crosstalk in the tumor microenvironment and metabolism are discussed, and nutritional modulation is inspired to be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of CRC.

In 2010, the Chinese Clinical Nutritionist Center of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association developed the first Chinese guideline on MNT for patients with diabetes, and it was updated in 2015. Since then, new evidence has emerged in the field of MNT and metabolic therapy in patients with diabetes. The Nutrition and Metabolic Management Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care organized a team of experts from related institutions, including the Clinical Nutrition Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society, Chinese Diabetes Society, Chinese Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutri-tion, and Chinese Clinical Nutritionist Center of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Their task was to develop the Chinese Guidelines of Medical Nutrition Therapy in Diabetes (2022 Edition) in accordance with the requirements of the Guidelines for the Formulation/Revision of Clinical Guidelines in China (2022 Edition) by combining the questions raised and evidence gathered in clinical practices in China, to guide and standardize the clinical MNT.

This study aims to...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While the health promoting effects of green tea polyphenols have been identi-fied among adult, research on children is scarce probably due to safety concerns about caffeine. This study aims to evaluate the safety of decaffeinated green tea polyphenols (DGTP) supplementation in girls with obesity and lay the foundation for its application in children population. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This 12-week randomized, double-blinded, parallel-controlled trial was performed among 62 girls with obesity aged 6 to 10 years old. Participants were allocated to take 400 mg/d DGTP (DGTP group, n = 31) or isodose placebo (Control group, n = 31) at random. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters including hepatic and renal function indicators, serum minerals concentrations, and routine blood parameters, were measured at baseline and the end of this trial. DGTP intake diary was required for each participant to record any abnormal reactions. RESULTS: After the 12-week supplementation, compared to Control group, the uric acid concentration in DGTP group showed a significant decrease (-48.0 ± 83.2 vs -0.01 ± 69.1, μmol/L), within the normal range. Regarding other biochemical indicators, there were no significant differences in changed values between the two groups. Throughout the trial, no adverse effects were reported in either group. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that the supplementation of 400 mg/d DGTP for 12 weeks had no adverse health effects in girls with obesity, providing evidence for the DGTP adoption in children research.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different coffee or tea consumption at breakfast on postprandial cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy individuals. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Eighteen healthy young subjects completed the trial. After 8-hour overnight fast, volunteers either ingested water, freeze-dried coffee, spray-dried coffee, green tea, black tea or oolong tea together with a breakfast consisting of an egg and 180g deep-fried dough sticks. Blood was drawn at 0h, 0.5h, 1h, 2h, and 3h. RESULTS: The differences in triglyceride (TG) values relative to the baseline levels at 2h and 3h of green tea was significantly decreased compared with black tea and oolong tea (p<0.05). Compared with black tea, green tea and oolong tea significantly reduced postprandial total cholesterol (TC) levels (p<0.05, p<0.01), respectively. Furthermore, the serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were substantially decreased after oolong tea consumption compared with black tea (p<0.05, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Green tea ingestion can lower the elevation of serum TG and TC levels after high-fat or high-cholesterol diets. Our findings have far-reaching implications given the widespread use of coffee and tea and the current concern over cardiometabolic risk factors.

The modified version SARC-F+EBM showed higher diagnostic performance. However, this cut-off value of body mass index (BMI) remained uncertain to be used in Chinese population. In this study, we used appropriate BMI recommended for Chinese older population and further modified SARC-F+EBM by combining calf circumference. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Diagnostic tests were performed and the receiver operating characteristics analyses were conducted between the SARC-F, SARC-F+EBM (cut-off of BMI: ≤ 21 kg/m2), SARC-F+EBM (CN) (cut-off of BMI: ≤ 22 kg/m2), SARC-CalF and SARC-CalF+EBM (CN) (cut-off of BMI: ≤ 22 kg/m2) in 1660 community-dwelling participants aged ≥ 65 years from China. RESULTS: The participants had an average age of 71.7±5.1 years, of which 56.8% were women. All the modified models could enhance the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of original SARC-F (all p<0.001). The SARC-F+EBM (CN) also showed a significantly higher sensitivity of 47.4% (p<0.001) and an AUC of 0.809 (p=0.005) than SARC-F+EBM. SARC-CalF+EBM (CN) was validated to be of great diagnostic value of the highest AUC of 0.88 among these sarcopenia screening tools, including SARC-F, SARC-CalF and SARC-F+EBM (CN) (all p<0.001). Using this study population as a reference, the optimal cut-off value of SARC-CalF+EBM (CN) is ≥12 points, with a sensitivity of 79.3% and a specificity of 80.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The SARC-F+EBM (CN) and SARC-CalF+EBM (CN) could enhance the diagnostic performance of SARC-F and SARC-F+EBM and are suitable sarcopenia screening tools for Chinese population.

METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN:...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to establish a non-invasive tool for the screening of NAFLD in an older adult population. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A total of 131,161 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants were randomly divided into training and validation sets (7:3). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method was used to screen risk factors. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to develop a nomogram, which was made available online. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis were used to validate the discrimination, calibration, and clinical practicability of the nomogram. Sex and age subgroup analyses were conducted to further validate the reliability of the model. RESULTS: Nine variables were identified for inclusion in the nomogram (age, sex, waist circumference, body mass index, exercise frequency, systolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values were 0.793 and 0.790 for the training set and the validation set, respectively. The calibration plots and decision curve analyses showed good calibration and clinical utility. Subgroup analyses demonstrated consistent discriminatory ability in different sex and age subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: This study established and validated a new nomogram model for evaluating the risk of NAFLD among older adults. The nomogram had good discriminatory performance and is a non-invasive and convenient tool for the screening of NAFLD in older adults.

This study in...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fermented foods play an important role in establishing intestinal bacterial flora, and the composition of the intestinal bacterial flora might be associated with neurodevelopment. This study investigated the association between maternal intake of fermented foods during pregnancy and early neuro-development in offspring. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Data were analyzed for 73,522 pregnant women participating in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Their intake of four common fermented foods during pregnancy was assessed using a semi-quantitative FFQ. Neurodevelopment in their infants at 1 year of age was estimated using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires. RESULTS: Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that maternal intake of miso soup and fermented soybeans was each associated with a significantly reduced risk of delay in infant communication skills. Maternal intake of fermented soybeans and cheese was each associated with a significantly reduced risk of delay in fine motor skills in the third and fourth quartiles. For problem-solving, preventive associations were observed with maternal intake of fermented soybeans in the second and third quartiles and with maternal intake of cheese in the third and fourth quartiles. Maternal intake of yogurt was associated with a significantly reduced risk of delay in personal-social skills in the third and fourth quartiles, while that of cheese was associated with a reduced risk in the third quartile. No reductions in risk were observed for gross motor skills. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that fermented food intake during pregnancy may have beneficial associations with several areas of psychomotor development in children.

This study aimed to investigate the associa-tion be...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous prospective studies have reported inconsistent findings on the associ-ation between obesity and mortality in patients with COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate the associa-tion between them by using a meta-analysis of prospective studies. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We searched PubMed and EMBASE to retrieve studies using keywords related to this topic on January 3, 2022. Data were extracted for a random-effects meta-analysis to calculate a pooled odds ratio (OR), relative risk (RR), or hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: In the meta-analysis of 15 prospective cohort studies, obesity significantly increased the risk of mortality in patients with COVID-19 (OR/RR/HR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.26 to 1.84; I2 = 90.4%). Most of the included studies were conducted in European (n = 10) and North American (n = 4) countries. In the subgroup meta-analysis by continent, there was a significant association between them in European countries (OR/RR/HR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.30 to 2.43; I2 = 81.4%). Also, in the subgroup meta-analysis by data source, obesity was significantly associated with the increased mortality in patients with COVID-19 in both population- and hospital-based data. CONCLUSIONS: We found that obesity is associated with the increased risk of mortality in patients of COVID-19.

METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Data were taken from the Pregnancy Health Care System and Hospital Information System in 2018 in Beijing. Vitamin D nutritional status in early pregnancy was evaluated among 4,978 pregnant women, and 4,540 women who took folic acid only (FA) or multiple mi-cronutrients supplements (MM) during the periconceptional period, were include to estimate the associations between periconceptional supplementation with MM and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency with logistic regression model. RESULTS: The mean early-pregnancy vitamin D concentration was 18.6 (±7.5) ng/mL, and the rates of deficiency and insufficiency were 31.6% and 60.5%, respectively. Compared to the FA group, the adjusted odds ratio (aOR, 95%confidence interval, CI) for insufficiency or deficiency of the MM group were 0.25(0.18-0.34), and the aOR (95%CI) for deficiency of the MM group were 0.17 (0.12-0.23). Women who took MMs for a longer period of time, at higher frequencies, and with higher compliance scores had lower rates of deficiency and insufficiency. In winter, spring, and autumn, taking MMs could reduce deficiency by about 70%; in summer, there was little effect. CONCLUSIONS: Among women in Beijing, serum concentrations of vitamin D in early pregnancy are relatively low, and the rates of deficiency and insufficiency are high. Taking MMs during the periconceptional period could improve this situation.

METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The study was conducted in an orthopedic ward of a tertiary grad...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of nutrition management under ERAS concept in patients with spinal tuberculosis. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The study was conducted in an orthopedic ward of a tertiary grade A special hospital in Beijing. The patients admitted from January 1, 2021 to June 27, 2023 were screened for inclusion. The qualified patients were randomized into experimental group or control group. The experimental group received perioperative nutrition management under the concept of ERAS while the control group received routine perioperative management in hospital. The data was collected on the next day of admission, the next day and the sixth day after operation, including laboratory indicators (lymphocyte count, hemoglobin level, etc), intraoperative bleeding volume, postoperative exhaust, defecation time, drainage volume, albumin infusion amount, nutritional risk score, length of stay, hospitalization costs, etc. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis correcting for gender, age, and baseline values were performed using SPSS24.0. RESULTS: A total of 127 patients with spinal tuberculosis completed the study. Compared with the control group, the intraoperative blood loss (p=0.028) in the experimental group was significantly reduced, the postoperative exhaust time (p=0.012) and defecation time (p=0.012) were significantly shortened, and the nutritional status (p<0.001) was significantly improved. Besides, the results of multivariate analysis are robust after correcting potential confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS: Nutrition management under the concept of ERAS is helpful to reduce intraoperative bleeding, promote postoperative flatus and defecation, and improve nutritional status in patients with spinal tuberculosis, which may further improve their clinical outcome and prognosis.

METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In this study, we used a change in motor score of Functional Independent Measure (FIM-M) of convalescent rehabilitation to investigate whether daily energy intake could influence the rehabilitation outcomes. Of the 217 patients hospitalized in our convalescent rehabilitation ward (CRW) between September 2016 and February 2017, 162 met the eligibility criteria for this study. RESULTS: For a 25 kcal/ ideal body weight (IBW)/day cutoff point, 76 patients consumed more than 25 kcal/IBW/day of energy (H-E group), and 86 patients consumed up to 25 kcal/IBW/day of energy (L-E group). Patients in the L-E group had poorer nutritional status than those in the H-E group at CRW admission. Moreover, patients in the L-E group lost some body weight (BW) during hospitalization, whereas patients in the H-E group gained some BW. Furthermore, the FIM-M efficiency in the L-E group was significantly lower than that in the H-E group. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that appropriate nutritional management given to rehabilitation patients for adequate energy intake to maintain or gain their BW could maximize the outcome of convalescent rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the potential benefits of Bacteroides fragilis 839 (BF839), a next-generation probiotics, in reducing myelosuppression and gastrointestinal toxicity associated with chemotherapy in...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the potential benefits of Bacteroides fragilis 839 (BF839), a next-generation probiotics, in reducing myelosuppression and gastrointestinal toxicity associated with chemotherapy in breast cancer patient. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: 40 women with early breast cancer were randomly assigned to the BF839 (n=20) or placebo (n=20) during the administration of adjuvant chemotherapy (4 cycles of epirubicin 100mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 600mg/m2). Myelosuppression and gastrointestinal adverse effects were monitored in both groups. RESULTS: Throughout the four treatment cycles, the percentage of patients experiencing myelosuppression was 42.5% in the BF839 group, significantly lower than the 66.3% observed in the control group (p=0.003). Two patients in the BF839 group and three patients in the placebo group received recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) due to leuko-penia/neutropenia. When considering an ITT analysis, which included all patients regardless of rhG-CSF treatment, the BF839 group exhibited less reduction from baseline in white blood cells (-0.31±1.19 vs -1.15±0.77, p=0.012) and neutrophils (0.06±1.00 vs -0.84±0.85, p=0.004) compared to the placebo group. The difference became even more significant when excluding the patients who received rhG-CSF injections. Throughout the four treatment cycles, compared to the placebo group, the BF839 group had significantly lower rates of 3-4 grade nausea (35.0% vs 71.3%, p=0.001), vomiting (20.0% vs 45.0%, p=0.001), and diarrhea (15.0% vs 30.0%, p=0.023). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that BF839 has the potential to effectively mitigate myelosuppression and gastrointestinal toxicity associated with chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of the Sichuan cuisine version of Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH diet-SC) on blood pressure reduction among hypertensive adults. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH) trial was a multicenter randomized controlled feeding trial among Chinese hypertensive people. We conducted a secondary analysis of the CHH trial using data from the Sichuan center in Southwest China. Fifty-three people aged 25 to 75 years with a mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 130 and 159 mmHg were enrolled. Eligible participants underwent a 1-week run-in period with the typical local diet and were randomized 1:1 to consume the CHH diet-SC (n=27) or typical local diet (n=26) for the next 4-week. The primary outcome was the net change in SBP, the secondary outcomes included diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the rate of BP control. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the CHH diet-SC decreased cooking salt, oil, and red meat content and increased inclusion of whole grains, fruits, seafood, low-fat dairy, soybean, and nuts; the SBP experienced reductions of 7.54, 8.60, 9.14, and 10.1 mmHg at the end of weeks 1 through 4; the DBP was reduced 4.01 mmHg at week 4; the MAP was significantly reduced 6.02 mmHg finally; and rate of BP control significantly increased (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Adoption of the CHH diet-SC for 4 weeks can significantly reduce BP and increase the rate of BP control in hypertensive adults.

To systemat...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent controversy over the bone benefits of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and the potential detrimental effects of excess calcium supplementation, has confused clinicians. To systematically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of vitamin D combined with calcium in preventing and treating osteoporotic symptoms in the elderly. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Databases were searched to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on vitamin D combined with calcium in the prevention and treatment of osteoporotic fractures in the elderly. After screening the literature, extracting data, and assessing the risk of bias in the included studies, the Meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: 19 RCTs were included, including 69,234 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the mortality rate of the vitamin D combined with calcium group was not statistically significant compared with the control group; the calcium combined with vitamin D significantly reduced the incidence of fractures compared with the control group,Density and serum 25-hydroxyl concentration, adverse reactions of calcium combined with vitamin D were higher than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of vitamin D and calcium has no difference in mortality rate, and it can prevent fractures in the elderly, and enhance bone density and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration, but still need to pay attention to adverse reactions in the gastrointestinal tract.

METH...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between sodium (Na) and potassium (K) nutritional condition and body compositions in youth aiming to give target population reasonable diet recommendations. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The cross-sectional study was conducted involving 512 healthy youth aged 18 to 31 years from universities in Beijing. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA) were used to collect dietary intake information and body compositions. RESULTS: There was an increasing tendency in fat-related indicators and muscle-related indicators of the dietary Na tertile group (p <0.05). Additionally, Weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and muscle-related indicators increased with the dietary K tertile group (p <0.05). Across increasing tertiles of dietary Na intake, the odds ratio (OR) was increased significantly (p < 0.05) in fat-related indicators. On the contrary, with the increased dietary Na intake, the OR decreased (p < 0.05) in appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) and body lean mass. As tertiles of dietary K intake increased, the OR in both skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI) and lean mass index (LMI) decreased. CONCLUSIONS: High dietary Na is a risk factor for abnormal lipid distribution in college students. High dietary K can maintain skeletal muscle mass and reduce the risk of obesity. Na in the diet has a greater impact on the body composition of young people than K. Low dietary Na and high dietary K still need to be strengthened in science popularization and practice among more college students.

However, macronutrients intake was inadequate for most tuberculosis patients. This study aimed to clarify the associations between macronutrients intake or energy percentages and liver dys-function in tuberculosis patients. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, 2581 active tu-berculosis patients aged ≥18 years were included from local tuberculosis clinics in Linyi, China. Macronutrients intake and energy percentages were assessed by 24-hour dietary recalls. The concentration of alanine transferase (ALT) or aspartate transaminase (AST) greater than 40 U/L was defined as liver dysfunction. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) was applied to determine the dose-response relationships. RESULTS: Liver dysfunction was assessed for 14.6% (377 patients) of tuberculosis patients. Higher protein (Q2-Q4 in model 1 and 2) or fat intake and fat-to-energy percentages and lower carbohydrate-to-energy percentages (Q4 in model 1) were associated with a decreased incidence of liver dysfunction (p-trend < 0.05). Among those who were male, normal BMI, or consumed energy <1636 kcal/d, inverse associations between protein or fat intake and the risks of liver dysfunction in models were suggested (p-trend < 0.05). Moreover, J-shaped curves in RCS were evident in liver dysfunction tuberculosis patients with protein or fat intake (p-nonlinearity < 0.05). Conclu-sions: Significant linear associations between macronutrients intake or energy percentages and liver dysfunction prevalence were found only in male, normal BMI, or less energy intake patients. The shapes of liver dysfunction-morbidity differed significantly by macronutrients intake or energy percentage.

However, there are concerns that avoiding meat may increase the risk of anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies, especially for vulnerable populations, such as adolescent women. The objective of this study was to compare the micronutrient status of vegetarian and non-vegetarian adolescent women in New Zealand. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Adolescent women aged 15-18 y were recruited from eight locations across New Zealand. Blood samples were analysed for: haemoglobin, serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, zinc, selenium, retinol binding protein, folate, vitamin B-12, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone. RESULTS: Of the 182 participants who provided a blood sample, 15% self-identified as vegetarian (n=27). On average, vegetarians had 3.1% (95% CI -5.8 to -0.4, p=0.025) lower haemoglobin, and 8.3% (95%CI -14.1 to -2.1, p=0.004) lower selenium. In contrast, serum folate was 80.5% (95% CI 45.7 to 123.7, p<0.001) higher. The prevalence of zinc and selenium deficiency was higher among vegetarians (50% and 12%, respectively) than non-vegetarians (21%, and 2%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent vegetarian women may be at increased risk of deficiency of micronutrients commonly found in animal products, including zinc and selenium, and may benefit from following dietary practices that enhance micronutrient intake and absorption.

However, few epidemiological studies have assessed brown sugar...BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although excess white sugar intake imposes various health burdens, brown sugar is high in minerals, polyphenols, and polycosanol. However, few epidemiological studies have assessed brown sugar intake for health benefit. People in the Amami islands region, with a relatively high proportion of individuals with longevity, consume brown sugar as a type of refreshment. This cohort study was conducted in Amami to clarify the association of brown sugar intake with mortality risk and cancer incidence. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Participants were recruited from the general population of Amami as part of the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study. The number of eligible participants was 5004 (2057 men and 2947 women). During the median follow-up period of 13.4 years, 274 deaths and 338 cases of cancer were observed. HRs and 95% CIs were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model, after adjusting for sugar-related and other variables. RESULTS: After adjusting for their related confounding factors, brown sugar intake was associated with decreased HRs and a decreasing trend for all-site and stomach cancer incidence (p = 0.001 and 0.017, respectively) in women and men, and for breast cancer incidence (p = 0.034) in women. Additionally, a decreasing trend in the HRs for lung cancer incidence was observed among never and ex-smokers (p = 0.039). Decreased HRs for overall death, cancer, and cardiovascular disease were not apparent. CONCLUSIONS: Brown sugar intake was associated with decreased risk of all-site, stomach, and breast cancer incidences in the Amami population.
