The number of applications for facial recognition technology is increasing due to the improvement in image quality, artificial intelligence, and computer processing power that has occurred during the last decades. Algorithms can be used to convert facial anthropometric landmarks into a computer representation, which can be used to help identify nonverbal information about an individual's health status. This article discusses the potential ways a facial recognition tool can perform a health assessment. Because facial attributes may be considered biometric data, clinicians should be informed about the clinical, ethical, and legal issues associated with its use.

Including the jawline in aesthetic assessment has become increasingly popular when using both surgical and nonsurgical techniques. Facial aging processes include bone resorption, fat pad atrophy, and a breakdown of the quality of collagen and elastin in the skin. To provide optimal treatment of the jawline using nonsurgical techniques, it is important to consider all of these aspects before planning treatment. Men and women have different facial aging processes and ideal facial ratios that must be respected. The objective of this article is to discuss the use of botulinum toxin A and hyaluronic acid filler injectable treatments, deoxycholic acid injectable treatments, and cryolipolysis treatments and explain how these treatments can be utilized for optimal rejuvenation of the jawline and perioral area.

Women undergoing breast reconstruction sometimes have unrealistic or unformed expectations regarding the reconstructive process and outcomes. The objectives of this study were to assess preoperative expectations in women undergoing mastectomy and initial breast reconstruction, provide expectations-based education, and evaluate satisfaction with education. Fifty-one women undergoing mastectomy and breast tissue expander placement participated in this study. At a preoperative education appointment, participants completed a questionnaire to determine whether their expectations were realistic, unrealistic, or unformed. A nurse practitioner reviewed the results and provided patient-centered, expectations-based education to modify expectations from unrealistic to realistic or to set expectations from unformed to realistic. Four to 6 weeks after surgery, a second questionnaire was provided to assess perceived satisfaction with education. Unrealistic and unformed expectations were identified related to complications, pain, scarring, sensation, symmetry, and aesthetic results. After receiving patient-centered, expectations-based preoperative education, participants agreed they had received the appropriate amount of information and felt well prepared for their surgery and recovery. Most participants reported they were aware of possible complications, had effective tools to manage their pain, and had received adequate information about scarring and sensation changes. Some participants continued to have unrealistic or unformed expectations related to aesthetic results. Women undergoing breast reconstruction often have unrealistic or unformed expectations before surgery. Identifying these expectations and proving expectations-based education resulted in satisfaction with information provided.

Some may believe that being an injector is a dream job and that the job is easy. These individuals may believe there is a lot of money to be made and that injectors can choose their own hours making people beautiful and enjoying their passion. In this article, I will talk about my experience breaking into aesthetics, describe what it is like to be a new nurse injector in 2021, explain what you should expect as a new nurse breaking into this field, delineate some tips I have learned along the way, and provide some advice from my experience thus far.

Shared mental models between surgeons and nurses allow them to effectively communicate and react to intraoperative complications. Microsurgery poses unique challenges that include the use of an operating microscope, fine instruments, and a restricted view of the operative field. We designed and delivered a microsurgical skills session for surgical nurses consisting of an introduction to the operating microscope and 3 practical stations involving increasingly complex motor tasks designed to highlight the importance of instrument handling and improve awareness of microsurgical challenges. Consultant plastic surgeons acted as scrub persons to add an element of role-reversal. All participants enjoyed the training session and felt that it improved their understanding of microsurgery and was relevant and helpful to their day-to-day role. All attendees reported that they would partake in similar sessions in the future. Our work suggests that role-reversal and skills-based education and training are valuable tools in improving multidisciplinary collaboration during microsurgery. Increasing shared knowledge of complex procedures encourages effective teamwork and communication, which leads to improved efficiency and better patient care. Our study is a first step toward development of a standardized microsurgical skills course for plastic surgical nurses and has broader implications for interprofessional education across all surgical specialties.

Aesthetic genital surgery for women encompasses both minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Cosmetic genital procedures for women described in this article include perineoplasty, vaginoplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, G-spot enlargement, Bartholin gland surgery, clitoral hoodoplasty, clitroplasty, hymenoplasty, and mons pubis plastic surgery. Based on a review of the literature for each procedure, the article discusses procedural methods and techniques, indications for implementation, potential consequences and side effects of the procedure, nursing implications, patients' motives for undergoing the procedure, and positions of scientific institutions relative to the procedure.

The standard therapy is clean intermittent catheterization. Latissimus dorsi detrusor myoplasty (LDDM) has been shown to provide functional contraction and allow patients with bladder acontractility to void voluntarily. Our goal was to summarize experimental studies of LDDM. We hypothesized that experimental studies would show that latissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) flaps for detrusor myoplasty have superior outcomes when compared with other types of flaps. On January 17, 2020, we conducted a systematic review of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Clinical Answers, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and EMBASE databases, without time frame limitations, to identify articles on the use of LDDM. We excluded studies that investigated other treatments. Of 54 articles identified by the search, three fulfilled the eligibility criteria. A total of 24 dogs underwent procedures and were evaluated with a maximum follow-up of 9 months. Three types of procedures were performed: LDM in situ reconfiguration, LDM myoplasty, and augmentation cystoplasty after supratrigonal cystectomy. Electrical stimulation, cystography, urodynamic and hydrodynamic measurements, and microscopic examinations were performed. Innervated LDM flaps transferred to the bladder were able to contract and promote voiding in response to electrical stimulation. Experimental studies have shown the feasibility of LDDM in canine models. Although no comparison groups were included, innervated LDM flap transferred to the bladder showed promising results regarding contraction capable of voiding.

Interviewing for aesthetic provider positions is vastly different from the interview process for many jobs. The field of aesthetics, especially providing injectable treatments, requires strong competencies in medical and nursing knowledge, artistic skill, and marketing prowess. Competition for hiring and retaining the best injectors can be fierce among employers. In a world where skilled injectors may have their pick of positions, candidates should be cognizant of the types of questions they should be asking their potential employers during the interview process to determine if a job is the best fit for them. Similarly, employers should be cognizant of the questions they should be asking potential employees to ensure that the candidate has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the demands of the position.
